Baltimore Orioles vs Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are happy to return to the field and host the Baltimore Orioles in an American League clash after a much needed break due to postponed games. The break might of been just what the Tigers needed as they entered this series losers of 5 straight. Baltimore has also not lived up to expectations especially as of late as they have dropped winnable games.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

Bad Pitching From Starters

The Baltimore Orioles are often overlooked as a competitive team in the AL East as they teams like the Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays steal the show, and the injuries to some of their most important players has not allowed the Orioles to catch their stride and enter the talks of those teams. The guys who are healthy in the Orioles lineup have not produced either which is not good considering they are already battling injuries as it is. Chris Davis has been one of the best hitters over the course of the last 5 seasons as he has hit over 40+ HRs in two of those seasons, but in 2018 he has not been good as he is batting .132 and only has 1 HR. Another problem for the Orioles has been the lack of help from their starting pitchers as the combination of Chris Tillman, Mike Wright Jr., and Kevin Gausman have combined for an ERA of 8.33 in their 8 starts. The one positive from the early going has been the production from superstar SS Manny Machado who is batting .308 with 3 HRs and 9 RBIs, but has also been making plays in his new position as he moved over from 3B in the offseason. The Baltimore Orioles will need to figure out their inconsistency problems and integrate their injured guys back into the lineup if they want to win games.

Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :

No Run Support

The Detroit Tigers have been bad in 2018 which was expected by most baseball fans, but all things considered the pitching staff has been pretty good in the early slate of games as they have produced a couple of quality games. With the exception of SP Jordan Zimmermann the combination of Francisco Liriano, Michael Fulmer, Matthew Boyd, and Mike Fiers has been good as they post a combined ERA of 2.81. The Tigers have also received some solid bullpen play from guys like Joe Jimenez, Chad Bell, Warwick Saupold, and Daniel Stumpf as they have combined for 17.2 innings and have given up a remarkable 0 runs in those appearances. With stat lines like that the Tigers should be one of the best teams in the MLB, but the lack of run support from their lineup is what has held back the Tigers from winning games. The Tigers currently do not boost 1 guy who has more than 1 HR, or have double digits in RBIs which is not good for a lineup who doesn’t boost depth as it is. The Tigers do have to be happy with the bat of RF Nicholas Castellanos who is the only guy batting above .300 with a batting average of .302 as he has contributed another 5 RBIs.

Against The Spread Selection: Detroit Tigers

My reason for the pick :

The Tigers have had their struggles this year in scoring runs, but after putting up 6 runs on the Yankees and receiving a break to get back in the cage and practice their swing I have to back the Tigers in this matchup. Boyd has also looked good this year as he has not let up much of anything and I don’t think It stops here. Detroit wins at home.
