Colorado Rockies vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to close out a 3 game home series against National League opponent in the Colorado Rockies before they head off to a series against their cross state rivals. The Pirates have silenced doubters as they have been one of the best teams in the MLB this year. Colorado is sitting in 2nd place in a deep NL West, but need to keep winning in order to catch Arizona or get a WC bid.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

Average Pitching + Average Hitting = Average Results

The title says everything about the Rockies start as they have not been performing at a high level in some of the most important aspects of baseball, hitting and pitching. The Rockies sit in the bottom 5 in terms of team batting average which is bad in terms of winning games, but to the advantage of the Rockies the NL West has been sluggish in the early going and the Rockies sit in 2nd. Some of the struggles for the Rockies in the early going has resided in the bats of some of the most reliable guys as SS Trevor Story and OF Ian Desmond both average below .200 to this point. Although Desmond is batting .190 this year he has contributed 4 HRs and 10 RBIs which is good for 2nd on the team. Trevor Story on the other hand is struggling making contact with the ball as he leads the team in strikeouts with 26 as he himself has a low batting average as he sits at a .176. All things put aside the Rockies do have a good 1-2 punch for the 8th and 9th innings as Adam Ottavino has been stellar in the setup role as he has pitched in 9.2 innings this season giving up a total of 1 earned run on 2 hits. The Rockies then get to bring in veteran Wade Davis who has 7 saves in the 8 opportunities he has had this year. The Rockies will need to break out of their slump if they want to reach another postseason berth.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

Good All-Around Play

The Pittsburgh Pirates have started off the 2018 season as good as anyone in the league, and they continue to win games as they are proving people wrong. Most teams in the MLB excel in one area of the game whether that be from the batters box, or pitching, but that’s not the case for this Pittsburgh team as they have received reasonably good pitching, and excellent hitting. Newly acquired Corey Dickerson is enjoying a good start with his new team as he is hitting .358 and has driven in 12 RBIs entering this series. Dickerson had a good year in 2017 as he hit 27 HRs, 62 RBIs, and averaged .282 from the plate, and Dickerson hasn’t missed a beat this season. Another guy who is continuing his 2017 campaign is 1B Josh Bell as he is batting .305 and has brought home 10 guys in the early going, but this was expected out of a guy who was one of the best on this Pirates team last year as in 2017 he had 26 HRs with 90 RBIs. The starters for the Pirates have also been really good this year as the combination of Trevor Williams, Steven Brault, and Jameson Taillon has gone 7-0 with an ERA of 1.97. The Pirates have showed why they are winning games as the combination of hitting and pitching is always the right way to win games.

Against The Spread Selection: Colorado Rockies

My reason for the pick :

The reason that I am taking the Rockies in this matchup is the fact that they have played good on the road this season. Kuhl just got wrecked against the lowly Marlins, and I don’t trust him against a team that can the ball 100x better than the Marlins in the Rockies. The Rockies confidence may also be high after beating the Nationals 3 games to 1 in their latest series. Take Colorado on the road.

Betting trends for Colorado Rockies:

  • Colorado is 6-3 against right handed pitchers this season.

  • The over is 6-4-1 on the road this season.

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Pirates:

  • Pittsburgh is 141-151-2 against league teams since 2017.

  • The over is 9-1 after a win this season.
