Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Philadelphia Phillies vs Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are set to close out a 3 game series against their NL East rivals in the Philadelphia Phillies. Both teams are still young, but good play from both teams in the early going has them looking ahead of schedule in their rebuild process.

Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :

Heating Up

The Philadelphia Phillies have settled down after starting the year 1-4, and have been one of the hottest teams since as they entered this series going 8-2 in their last 10 games. The Phillies in their most recent series against the Tampa Bay Rays showed the ability to not only hit the ball, but showed spurts of great pitching and if they can put both aspects of the game together on a consistent basis we may see this team make a run down the stretch. The first game of the series on 4/13 was where the pitching was on point as the Phillies started 25 year old Vince Velasquez who was able to go 6.2 innings while striking out 7 guys in a 2-1 Phillies win. 2 games later the Phillies were able to flip a switch and light up the scoreboard with 10 runs as the Phillies won 10-4. The Phillies were satisfied to see their rookie 2B Scott Kingery continue to contribute to his successful 1st year as he had 3 RBIs in this matchup. Kingery has been a bright spot in the Phillies lineup as he has 2 HRs and 12 RBIs in the early going. The Philadelphia Phillies don’t only have some of the better young guys in the league, but contain pieces like Jake Arietta and Carlos Santana who have both played in the World Series, and will be mentors down the stretch of the season to the young guys.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

Great Hitting

The Atlanta Braves have looked good in the early going as they are battling back and forth with the Phillies for the 2nd spot in the NL East standings. Some of the most satisfying news for the Braves has to be that they still boost some of the best prospects as they haven’t even see the MLB yet, and with the good start to the season it makes you wonder where this team will be come MLB time for these prospects. The Braves have been one of the most solid teams from the batters box as they have an abundance of guys that bat over .300 on the season, and as a team have one of the best averages in baseball. Perhaps one of the youngest guys in the MLB right now is one of the best as Ozzie Albies is posting a great stat line this year with 5 HRs, 11 RBIs, and a batting average of .313. The Braves also have some veterans who have preformed well too as 34 year old Kurt Suzuki is having one of his best starts yet as he is batting .300 on the season with 2 HRs. The Braves have also enjoyed the production this year out of the bullpen as 2nd year RP A.J. Minter and 39 year old Peter Moylan have seen a combination of 11 innings to start the season, but have yet to give up a run in those innings. The Braves are showing hope this year, and have potential to be one of the best teams in the NL East once the young guys fully develop.

How Philadelphia Phillies & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Philadelphia is 9-5, 4-4 on the road.

Atlanta is 8-6, 4-2 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Vince Velasquez (1-1, 3.52 ERA) for the Philadelphia Phillies vs. Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 3.31 ERA) for the Atlanta Braves.

Velasquez last started on 4/13 against the Rays where he went 6.2 innings striking out 7 guys in a W.

McCarthy last started on 4/11 against the Nationals where he went 5 innings giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits in a ND.

Atlanta is in the top 3 in runs scored this season while Philadelphia is just outside the top 10.

Philadelphia and Atlanta both rank just outside the top 10 in team ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies

My reason for the pick :

The Philadelphia Phillies have been hot as of recent, and Velasquez is coming off his best start yet. McCarthy injured his non throwing shoulder last outing which caused him to leave the game early, and although I don’t believe it will play a factor it is still something to watch. The Phillies have been doing enough to win games which we will see in this game as well.

Betting trends for Philadelphia Phillies:

  • Philadelphia is 5-5 against right handed pitchers this season.

  • The over is 38-30-5 after a loss since 2017.

Betting trends for Atlanta Braves:

  • Atlanta is 187-250 with no rest since 2015.

  • The under is 6-5-3 in NL games this season.
