Cincinnati Reds vs St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals get to return home after playing 2 straight series on the road as they will welcome in NL Central foes in the Cincinnati Reds in a 3 game series. These teams met as recently as 4/15 where the Cardinals swept the Reds in 4 games in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :

Big Game From Top Of The Lineup

The Cincinnati Reds are not good this season and that is no secret but in a recent matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Reds finally lost an 8 game win streak which is never a good way to start the season. The Reds have been struggling to win games as the arms of their pitchers have essentially fallen off and their lineup has not been swinging at the ball. On 4/16 the Reds were able to enjoy an abundance of hitting especially from the top of their lineup and just enough pitching to be able to win the game 10-4. A guy that had a really good game was leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton who has not been his typical get on base and make noise on the base path self mainly because he is batting below .200. Hamilton was able to go 2 for 4 in this ball game driving in 3 RBIs which accounts for half of the RBIs he has accumulated this season (6). The Reds started Luis Castillo in this ball game who didn’t necessarily have a great game under any standards as he went 6.2 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 5 hits but the bullpen work of guys like Wandy Peralta and Raisel Iglesias who have been surehanded all season help secured the wins for the Reds. Peralta and Iglesias have been as good as any pitcher on the Reds this season as they have combined for 15 innings giving up only one earned run.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

Streaky Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have been trying to return to relevancy the last couple of years as they were one of the most consistent teams at the beginning of this decade as they made the playoffs from 2011-2015 but given the success of the Chicago Cubs, we have often forgotten about any other team in the NL Central. The Cardinals started the year as average as possible as they never got any consistent win streak going but a recent series against the lowly reds has allowed the Cardinals to grab a sweep and momentum into a Chicago Cubs series. As good as the Cardinals have been in the early going they have missed consistent batting from their 1 and 3 batters in Dexter Fowler and Matt Carpenter. Fowler has been the leadoff man ever since he arrived in St. Louis back in 2017 as he flip-flopped places with former Cardinal now Cub, Jason Heyward. Fowler is batting .190 this season which is not the ideal batting average from a leadoff hitter and Carpenter sits just below him with a batting average of .185. The Cardinals are hoping that after a 4/17 meeting with the Chicago Cubs in which Matt Carpenter had 3 RBIs gets their three-hole hitter going as he gets to carry that confidence into a series with the worst pitching team in the MLB.

Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals

My reason for the pick :

Anytime I see the Cincinnati Reds on the slate of games I think free money as they are just pitiful to watch. Finnegan got banged up by the Cardinals in his first start of the season which essentially got the Cards rolling to the point they are at right now. Wacha has been one of the Cardinals best pitchers the last couple of years and I don’t see him getting rattled by the Reds. Cardinals win at home.
