The Chicago White Sox are set to return home after a couple of games on the road as they play 6 straight games at home hosting the defending champion Houston Astros in the first 3 games.
Houston Astros's Latest Performance :
Slumping Against AL West
The Houston Astros had their way with AL West opponents in 2017 as they went 50-26 in division games, but a recent slide in series against the Rangers and Mariners has the Astros falling down the standings. In a 4/16 matchup with divisional rivals in the Seattle Mariners, George Springer hit another leadoff HR to put the Astros up 1-0 before fans even took their seats. The Astros also finally received a good game out of Dallas Keuchel after he was sluggish in his first 3 starts. Keuchel went 8 innings giving up 2 earned runs in the process which is not terrible considering the firepower the Astros have in their bats, but in this matchup proved to be the problem. After the leadoff HR from Springer, the Astros only were able to squeeze out 2 more hits the whole game none of which resulted in runs as Houston fell 2-1. The Houston Astros have the best team ERA in all of baseball as they have some great starters, but a really good bullpen as Chad Devenski and Collin McHugh have combined for 14.2 innings giving up a total of 2 earned runs. The Astors have had some solid pitching this season, but the lack of runs is what has prevented this team from winning more games this season.
Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :
Another Quality Start
No, the Chicago White Sox as a team are not off to a quality start as they have been trending the other way of quality, but the White Sox have a good young pitcher who has been a bright spot this year. 24-year-old Reynaldo Lopez has easily not only been the best starter for the White Sox but has been the best overall pitchers as he has been dealing in the 19 innings he has appeared in. Lopez has started 3 games this year striking out 21 guys as he posts an ERA of 1.42, but the problem for Lopez has been the lack of support from the White Sox lineup as he has gone 0-2 in those games. Lopez most recently started on 4/16 as he enjoyed a good game striking out 10 guys in the 6 innings and although Lopez did give up 2 earned runs in the game it got much worse when he came out. The White Sox have been cycling through relievers all season having little to no success with any of them and we saw an example of that in this matchup as Chris Volstad came in and allowed 3 earned runs as he was only able to get 1 out before being pulled. The White Sox have 3 relievers who have appeared in 6.2 innings of work, but their average ERA sits at a 21.29.
How Houston Astros & Chicago White Sox Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Houston is 10-7, 4-4 on the road.
Chicago is 4-9, 1-5 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Justin Verlander (2-0, 1.35 ERA) for the Houston Astros vs. James Shields (1-0, 4.15 ERA) for the Chicago White Sox.
Verlander last started on 4/15 against the Rangers where he went 8 innings striking out 11 guys in a ND.
Shields last started on 4/11 against the Rays where he went 6.1 innings giving up only 1 earned run on 4 hits in a ND.
Houston and Chicago both rank in the bottom half in team runs.
Houston ranks #1 in ERA as Chicago ranks in the bottom 3.
Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros
My reason for the pick :
The Houston Astros have a potential Cy Young winner in Justin Verlander on the mound in this matchup and after coming off an 11 strikeout game Verlander can easily do the same thing against the White Sox. Houston has had a rough stretch against AL Central opponents but they have a perfect opportunity to beat up on a team that has no business playing this year. Astros win on the road.
