San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

Former Yankees Are Bust

The San Diego Padres look years away from competing but with the top-ranked farm system in all of baseball, Padre fans have hope that their time will come. The San Diego Padres made plenty of moves this offseason which included signing Eric Hosmer and trading for Freddy Galvis, Bryan Mitchell, and Chase Headley. All smart moves especially considering the Padres only gave up a minor-leaguer for two MLB players well that’s what we thought. Bryan Mitchell and Chase Headley have had done nothing positive for the Padres this year as both guys have contributed more towards losing efforts than winning. Bryan Mitchell is 0-2 in 3 starts this season as he his ERA sits at a 5.27 but even worse has been the 2nd most expensive guy on the Padres roster in Chase Headly who only has 1 hit in 26 ABs this season bringing his batting average to a .038. Chase Headley has also seen his playing time diminish as the Padres have found their new starting 3B in rookie Christian Villanueva. Villanueva has taken the MLB by storm this season as he currently sits in 3rd in HRs as he has 6 to go along with 13 RBIs. Villaneuva has never had more than a 20 HR season in his 8 years in the minors but looks well on his way this year to 30+ HRs.

Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :

Seeking Consecutive Playoff Appearances

The Arizona Diamondbacks are seeking their 7th playoff appearance in as many as 20 years but if the Diamondbacks are able to make the playoffs this year it will only be the 2nd time in team history that the Diamondbacks have made it in back to back years with the last time dating to the 2001-2002 seasons. The Diamondbacks look well on their way to winning the division as they have enjoyed solid pitching from their starters in the early going. The best pitcher for the Diamondbacks has been Patrick Corbin who may be in the running for a Cy Young at the end of the season. Corbin has started 4 games this season going 3-0 in those games as he currently sits in the top 3 in strikeouts with 37. Corbin in his most recent start on 4/17 was unhittable as he carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning before giving up a check-swing single. Corbin finished the full game as he only let up one hit but more remarkably struck out 8 guys while only walking 1 batter. Corbin isn’t the only starter enjoying a good year as the combination of the 2-3 starters in Zack Godley and Robbie Ray have gone 4-1 in their starts. The Diamondbacks pose a serious threat to the NL this year and may have a chance of competing for the NLCS.

Against The Spread Selection: Arizona Diamondbacks

My reason for the pick :

I have to back the hotter team here as the Diamondbacks have dominated baseball this season while San Diego sits at the bottom of the division. Arizona has also been very good at defending their home field this year. All though a pitcher hasn’t been announced for Arizona I am confident in all 5 starters as all 5 are good for the Diamondbacks and have been very productive this year. Take Arizona.
