Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are in game 4 of a 12 game homestand as they host divisional rivals in the Toronto Blue Jays. Both teams should be contenders for a playoff spot come October as both teams made the necessary roster moves to compete in the AL East.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

Big Game From New Guys

The Toronto Blue Jays went from consecutive playoff appearances to a 76 win 4th place finish in about a year span, but the Blue Jays have thrown the 2017 year away as they have come out fairly good in the early going of 2018. The Blue Jays knew that they needed to make moves to continue being a team that competes for pennants year after year and they did just that as they signed some key guys during this past offseason. The Blue Jays signed Yangervis Solarte and Randal Grichuk who had pretty strong seasons in 2017, and although Solarte has been off to a good start the same can’t be said for Grichuk who has the lowest batting average on the team with a .071. The Blue Jays played a double-header on 4/17 against the Kansas City Royals which was just what Grichuk needed to get back on track as both Solarte and Grichuck had a big game 1. The Blue Jays went on to win game one 11-3, but 7 of those runs can be contributed to the bats of the 2 newly acquired guys as Solarte had 4 RBIs and Grichuk had 3. Solarte has been enjoying a pretty good year in 2018 as he has 3 HRs, 8 RBIs with a nice batting average of .311 as he has been playing all over the field as he has seen time at 2B, 3B, and DH. The Blue Jays hope that a big game 1 from Grichuk will help him gain more confidence in himself and his swing.

New York Yankees's Latest Performance :

New Shortstop In Town

The New York Yankees just finished up a series with their former captain’s new team in the Miami Marlins and although it was nice to have Derek Jeter back at Yankee Stadium the new SS reminded Yankee fans that they are in good hands now. Didi Gregorius took the keys as the full-time shortstop in 2015 after he was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks via trade, but Didi was still an unestablished player as he played little to no games in the MLB before coming over. Didi over the years started showing a slight improvement in both the batter’s box and in the field, but come 2017 he has blown up. Last season was a breakout year for Didi as he had 25 HRs and 87 RBIs while batting .287 on the year, and he has continued his hot hitting in 2018 as he leads a team with guys like Stanton, Judge, and Sanchez in HRs and RBIs. On 4/16 the Yankees welcomed the Miami Marlins to town and Didi didn’t disappoint in this matchup as he went 2 for 4 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs in a 12-1 win. After this game, Didi is now posting a stat line of 5 HRs, 16 RBIs, and a .327 batting average which if he keeps pace will break his own season records. Although Jeter wasn’t known as a power hitter it is still satisfying to know that your new shortstop has already had a higher season total in HRs in his short career as the most Jeter has ever hit was 24.

Toronto ranks in the top half of team ERA while the Yankees rank in the bottom 10.

Against The Spread Selection: Toronto Blue Jays

My reason for the pick :

Both starting pitchers in this matchup had terrible games last go around, but Marco Estrada has been the better overall pitchers this year as his first start of the year was solid. The Yankees have also been sluggish throughout the year as they have been inconsistent while Toronto has been solid throughout the year. Toronto should have no problem taking this game against Sonny Gray.
