New York Mets vs St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to continue a nice little string of wins as they will take on one of the best teams in the National League in the New York Mets. This is a rematch of the opening series of the 2018 season where the Mets won the series, 2-1.

New York Mets's Latest Performance :

Walk-Off Effort

The New York Mets have lived and died by their pitching this season as we have seen them take some tough losses when their pitching is off and some good wins when their pitching is on and their bats are still off. In a 4/20 matchup against their division rivals in the Atlanta Braves, we saw the bats in the Mets win the game as Yoenis Cespedes was able to hit in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the 12th inning which eventually proved to be the winning hit. Cespedes has struggled with strikeouts this season as he currently sits towards the top of the MLB with 34, but when Cespedes does make contact it usually results in runs being scored as he currently leads the team with 4 HRs and 18 RBIs. The Mets have also enjoyed production from their newly acquired 3B Todd Frazier as Frazier is batting .274 with 3 HRs and 14 RBIs. The Mets bullpen has suffered a little over the course of the last week or so, but closer Jeurys Familia has been as consistent as any reliever in the MLB this season as he has had 9 save opportunities this season capitalizing on 8 of those chances. Familia has also picked up a win this season as he has pitched in 11.1 shutout innings. If the Mets are able to get 6-7 innings out of their amazing starting rotation and get some production out of their bullpen the Mets have shown that they can win even without the bats.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

Squeezing Out a Win

I say it year after year that the Cardinals will return back to the playoffs, but this year I truly believe that they will make the playoffs as they have made some necessary additions to win now as they added a stud in Marcell Ozuna. The St. Louis Cardinals were lucky to squeeze out a win against the Cincinnati Reds on 4/21 as they were facing bases loaded with only 1 out up by 1, but luckily Jordan Hicks was able to get the Reds Scooter Gennett to ground into a double play to secure the win. The Cardinals enjoyed run production from guys that have produced all year as Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong were both able to go yard for their 6th HRs of the year. Starter Carlos Martinez pitched another good game as he gave the Cardinals 6 shutout innings striking out 7 guys in the process. Martinez has been the best starter this season as he is posting an ERA of 1.42 through his first 5 starts. Paul DeJong has enjoyed a good 2nd year in the MLB as the youngster has 6 HRs and 10 RBIs on the season and looks like a candidate to make the all-star game as he leads all SS in HRs. Jordan Hicks has enjoyed a good year out of the bullpen as he has been by far the best reliever for this Cardinals team as he has pitched in 10.2 shutout innings this year.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

New York is 14-5, 7-1 on the road.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Steven Matz (1-1, 4.42 ERA) for the New York Mets vs. Adam Wainwright (1-2, 3.45 ERA) for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Matz last started on 4/18 against the Nationals where he went 4 innings giving up 3 earned runs in a ND.

Wainwright last started on 4/17 against the Cubs where he went 5 innings giving up 0 earned runs in a W.

New York and St. Louis both rank outside the top 10 in runs scored.

St. Louis ranks inside the top 1 in team ERA while New York ranks just outside the top 10.

Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals

My reason for the pick :

Wainwright looked like his vintage self in his last matchup and I am highly confident that he will build off his last start and take it into this matchup. Matz has also been average for the Mets this year and I just don’t trust the 26-year-old yet. Cardinals run into this matchup with high confidence after getting to beat up on the Reds their previous series.

Betting trends for New York Mets:

  • New York is 9-5 with no rest this season.

  • The over is 5-3 on the road this season.

Betting trends for St. Louis Cardinals:

  • St. Louis is 10-4 as the favorite this season.

  • The under is 8-2-1 after a win this season.
