Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Tampa Bay Rays vs Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are set to open another home series in a battle of the bottom feeders in the AL East as they will play host to the Tampa Bay Rays. This is the first series of the season as they will meet again back in Baltimore on 5/11.

Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :

Run Explosion

The Tampa Bay Rays were questioned for some of the moves that they made this past offseason as some of their best players were either sent away via trade or free agency. After all the moves made the Rays looked like a prime candidate to be one of the worst teams in the MLB. The Rays backed that statement up during the first two weeks, but to the Rays credit, they have found some pop in their bat as of recent as they put up a combined 18 runs in 2 games against a pretty good team in the Minnesota Twins. The best guy in the early going for the Rays has been one of the oldest guys on the team in 11-year veteran, Denard Span. Span has enjoyed back to back games where he has put up a ton of production as on 4/20 Span went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and then followed this game up with a similar stat line as on 4/21 he also went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs. Span leads the team in RBIs with 17 and if he keeps pace he should destroy his career high in RBIs as he had 68 in 2009. The Rays on 4/21 also enjoyed good pitching from their 3rd-year youngster Blake Snell as he went 7 innings giving up only 1 earned run on 5 hits. Snell has been really good for the Rays as he is 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA and looks much improved this season after having inconsistency problems in 2017.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

Nice Collective Effort

The Baltimore Orioles outside of Manny Machado and Dylan Bundy have been nothing to write home about as they have been the best pitcher and batter on this Orioles roster. On 4/20 against the Cleveland Indians, we saw an example of the Manny Machado and the Dylan Bundy show as the two single handily won the game for the Orioles as Bundy pitched a stellar game and Machado provided the run support. Bundy was able to pitch 6 innings giving up only 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 9 guys in a 3-1 win. Bundy has started 5 games this season and has an ERA of 1.42 with 40 strikeouts but due to the lack of run support from their lineup, Bundy has a record of 1-2. Manny Machado on the other hand has contributed most of the run support for the Orioles as he has contributed 6 HRs and 15 RBIs on the season which are both team best. Machado on 4/20 contributed one of the 3 RBIs in the ball game with a base hit. Trey Mancini was able to contribute the other 2 RBIs as he went 1 for 4 from the plate. Richard Bleier has been stellar out of the bullpen this season as he has pitched in 14.2 innings this season holding an ERA of .61 and a record of 2-0.

Against The Spread Selection: Tampa Bay Rays

My reason for the pick :

Tampa Bay looks like they have put it together after a couple of nice wins against one of the top teams in the AL Central. Cobb has been awful in first 2 starts as he looks like a high school kid on an MLB mound as he has no control over where the ball goes. No matter who the Rays put on the mound I have more faith in them rather than the awful Cobb. Rays should put up 6 runs in a win.
