Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Detroit Tigers vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates will take place on Wednesday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at 7:05 pm EST.  Currently, the Tigers occupy the 3rd spot within the AL Central division while the Pirates occupy the 3rd place spot in the NL Central.  This series will represent the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams.  In their last series, the pirates pulled off the sweep of the Tigers in the opening 3-game series of the season.  In recent matchups, the Pirates have dominated by winning 7 of the last 8.

Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :

The Detroit Tigers endured a rough start to their season losing 9 of their first 13 contests, yet, they have since turned the tide in this young season.  In other words, they rebounded from a rough start to win 5 of their last 6 games leading into this game.  Aside from sweeping the Baltimore Orioles in a 3-game set, they won their series against the lowly Kansas City Royals 2 games to 1 in last weekend’s series.  It would be important to note that the past 5 wins for the Tigers have been at home.  Now, they must illustrate that they can take this momentum on the road, where they are below average thus far in the season.

Currently, the Tigers are averaging 4.68 runs per game (13th) with a team batting average of .249 (10th), 15 homers (26th), along with 10 stolen bases (12th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.80 (13th) with 143 k’s (27th), along with 8 quality starts on the year (14th).

Miguel Cabrera (.299 BA on 67 AB), Nicholas Castellanos (.286 BA on 77 AB), and Leonys Martin (.286 BA on 70 AB) spearhead the Tiger offensive attack.  Jeimer Candelario (.275 BA on 80 AB) along with Victor Martinez (.274 BA on 62 AB) have also been solid as well this season.

Matthew Boyd (0-1) has pitched 19.1 innings this year while allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, 2 homers, 4 walks, and 11 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.40 while Michael Fulmer (1-2) has pitched 23.1 innings while allowing 12 runs on 26 hits, 3 homers, 6 walks, and 13 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.47.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pittsburgh Pirates began the season winning 12 of their first 16 games, but, have fallen on losing times lately as they are losers in 5 of their last 6 games.  The unfortunate stretch came at the hands of the Colorado Rockies, a 3-game stint to where they lost 1-2, along with the Philadelphia Phillies, where they were swept in a 4-game series in a matchup last weekend.  In their last 5 losses, the Pirates were outscored 23-5; However, they seek to gain their mojo back against a team that they have dominated in recent matchups.

For the season, the Pirates are averaging 4.86 runs per game (10th) with a team batting average of .252 (9th), 21 homers (17th), along with 10 stolen bases (15th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.36 (19th) with 160 strikeouts (22nd) and 9 quality starts on the season (11th).

Corey Dickerson (.306 BA on 72 AB), Colin Moran (.288 BA on 59 AB), Starlin Marte (.278 BA on 79 AB), and Francisco Cervelli (.262 BA on 61 AB) have been consistent at the plate this year for the Pirates.  On the other hand, Josh Bell (.244 BA on 82 AB) and Jordy Mercer (.242 BA on 62 AB) have also been pivotal the Pittsburgh offensive success.

Trevor Williams (3-1) has been solid for the Pirates this year pitching 23.1 innings while allowing 5 runs on 18 hits, 1 homer, 10 walks, and 14 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.93 while Jameson Taillon (2-1) has pitched 22 innings while allowing 7 runs on 13 hits, 23 hom34s, 7 walks, and 21 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.86.  Ivan Nova (2-1), Steven Brault (2-1), and Chad Kuhl (2-1) have each been serviceable as well combining for 75.3 innings, 36 runs on 76 hits, 8 homers, 23 walks, and 57 strikeouts thus far.

How Detroit Tigers & Pittsburgh Pirates Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

The Detroit Tigers are 10-9 ATS while the O/U is 8-11 for the season.  The Pittsburgh Pirates, on the other hand, are 11-10 ATS and the O/U being 11-7-3.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

While the Pirates have had their way with the Tigers in recent matchups, I will say that this will be an interesting matchup simply because of Detroit’s recent, inspired play in contrast to the shaky play exhibited by Pittsburgh in their last 2 series.  Under normal circumstances where both teams entered the matchup on winning notes, one would expect the Pirates to continue their dominant play in this matchup, however, the overall complexity of the game has changed since the Pirates have had trouble lately in the scoring department.  On the other hand, the bats of the Tigers are heating up and look to increase their present momentum against a team that they have had troubles with in the past.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

Due to the recent play for each side, I feel as though the total will be the most appealing choice in this matchup.  The fact is that the under has indeed been the play for the Tigers who, coincidentally enough, I feel have the edge in this matchup due to the Pirates struggles in recent contest.  With that being said, I expect both teams to enter with an abundance of focus, thus leading to the decreased probability of mental error(s) that they both have consistently committed time and time again this season.  In all, the under is what I will side with in game 2.
