Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Los Angeles Angels vs Houston Astros

The final game of a 3-game set between the visiting Los Angeles Angels and the Houston Astros will take place at Minute Maid Field in Houston, Texas, at 2:10 pm EST.  Currently, the Houston Astros occupy the top spot in the AL West division while the Angels are following close behind in the 2nd slot.  This series has been the first meeting of the year between these two teams, however, the Astros have won 12 of the last 19 matchups, with 6 of the last 10 wins coming at home.

Los Angeles Angels's Latest Performance :

Houston has been one the most consistent teams in MLB this season thus far.  They began the season winning 10 of their first 14 games.  And while they have been met with some rough patches, particularly in two recent consecutive series against the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers (to which they lost 1-2), the Astros have rebounded to win 5-straight games since.  In the following series after their bitter defeats, the Astros were dominant winning 3 out of 4 games against the Seattle Mariners.

For the season, Houston is averaging 4.91 runs per game (9th) with a team batting average of .254 (6th), 22 homers (11th), along with 10 stolen bases on the year (13th).  Their pitching staff ranks highest in MLB stats with an ERA of 2.28 (1st) with 240 strikeouts (1st) along with 16 quality starts (1st).

Jose Altuve (.349 BA on 86 AB), Carlos Correa (.333 BA on 75 AB), Josh Reddick (267 BA on 60 AB), and Alex Bregman (.241 BA on 83 AB) has spearheaded the Astros offense throughout the year.  George Springer (.239 BA on 88 AB) and Even Gattis (.219 BA on 64 AB) have also been solid contributors for the Astros at the plate.

Charlie Morton (3-0) has been consistent this year for Houston pitching 25 innings while allowing only 3 runs on 16 hits, 2 homers, 6 walks, and 33 strikeouts with an ERA of .72.  Gerrit Cole (2-0) has pitched 28 innings while allowing 4 runs on 15 hits, 3 homers, 6 walks, and 41 strikeouts with an ERA of .96 while Justin Verlander (3-0) has pitched 32.2 innings thus far while allowing 5 runs on 17 hits, 3 homers, 8 walks, and 39 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.10.

Houston Astros's Latest Performance :

The Angels have been on fire this season winning 13 of their first 16 games, however, recently the Angels had begun to lose a bit of their swagger, entering this series losers of 4 of their last 5 contests.  The reason for their slide came at the hands of the Boston Red Sox as they swept the Angels 3-0 on the road while outscoring the home team by a margin of 25-3.  It’s plain that the sweep had lingering effects on the Angels as they lost game 1 of a 3-game set with the San Francisco Giants at home by an 8-1 score last Friday.  Nonetheless, they were able to gain their footing in game 2 with the slim 4-3 win on Saturday.  In all, the Angels remain a dangerous team and they seek to illustrate this against yet another AL super-team, the Houston Astros.

For the season, the Angels have been dominant all season, averaging 5.29 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .264 (4th), 31 homers (1st), along with 10 stolen bases (14th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.17 (18th) with 198 strikeouts (8th) along with 5 quality starts for the season, good for 27th in the league.

Mike Trout (.309 BA on 81 AB), Andrelton Simmons (.295 BA on 78 AB), Albert Pujols (.267 BA on 90 AB), Luis Valbuena (.258 BA on 66 AB), and Justin Upton (.244 BA on 82 AB) have all been solid at the plate on the year.  Zack Cozart has been outstanding as well with a .238 batting average on 80 at bats.

Garrett Richards (3-0) has been the most consistent pitcher on the Angels’ staff this season.  Richards has pitched 26 innings while allowing 10 runs on 18 hits, 4 home runs, 16 walks, and 35 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.46 for the year.

How Los Angeles Angels & Houston Astros Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Los Angeles Angels are 12-9 ATS while the O/U is 13-8 while the Houston Astros are 12-10 ATS and the O/U is 9-13.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will be a great matchup in that, on one hand, Houston possesses the offensive weapons that allow them to string together hits at any point in the game while also limiting team’s offensive opportunities due to their lights out pitching staff.  On the other hand, the Angels may not possess an equal pitching staff in terms of overall experience, they have been solid enough in which to limit the damage that other teams can unleash in terms of hits and runs.  Furthermore, even with their pitching staff not being on their A game recently, the offense has numerous dangerous weapons that can change the complexity of a game with just a swing of the bat.  In this matchup, the Angels will be looking to end this series on a high note while the Houston Astros look to further widen their lead over the Angels in the AL West.

Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros

My reason for the pick :

I see this as being one of the most interesting and potentially competitive matchups of the season thus far.  The up-and-coming Angels look to obtain some redemption after their mini-slide which began with the sweep against Boston.  To do this, they must be able to not only hone in on their offensive prowess as well as ensure that their pitching staff remains solid enough in which to contain the dangerous offense of the Astros.  The Astros, however, is very familiar with the Angels and have dominated them in the past, both at home and on the road.  In the end, Houston will once against be too much for the Angels at this point in the season.
