Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Miami Marlins vs Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to build a win streak and climb back into the NL West picture, and they have a perfect opportunity to do just that as they will host the rebuilding Miami Marlins in game 3 of a 3 game series. These two teams will meet again on 5/15 where Los Angeles will travel down to Miami for another 3 game series.
Miami Marlins's Latest Performance :
Development Of Young Guys
Derek Jeter and the rest of the Marlins organization knew coming into this season that they would not win many games which is fine by their standards, but what needs to be done is the Marlins need to keep developing their young guys into competitive MLB players. The Marlins acquired a top 25 prospect in Lewis Brinson last season, but Brinson has not lived up to expectations in 2018 as he is still developing his raw game. Brinson has 3 HRs on the season which have all came in the last 15 games but outside of his 3 HRs he has one other hit as he has gone 4 for 48 (.083). Brinson was a guy in the minors who was putting up a .300 batting average on a consistent basis, but the MLB has been a shock to him as he has not found his swing against big league pitchers. The Marlins are hoping that a good outing from starter Caleb Smith has the 2nd year starter back on the right track as he was able to strike out 10 guys in 6 innings of work on 4/22 against the Brewers. Caleb Smith enters this series with a record of 0-3 with an ERA of 5.82 and although he has only given up 14 hits through 5 starts 13 earned runs have come from those hits. Smith came over in the Stanton trade and only saw 2 other starts in his career so his ceiling as a starter is still high so the Marlins hope he develops into a top-end of the rotation guy in the coming years.

What Is The Problem In LA?
The Los Angeles Dodgers are coming off a 104 win season and a game 7 World Series loss with the same lineup from 2017, so they should be one of the best teams in the MLB in 2018, but as we know that has not been the case. The Dodgers have been average with their bats and their pitching this season which has resulted in an average start, but if the Dodgers want to start winning more games they will need to tighten up both facets of the game. The two best Dodgers from the plate in the early going has been Yasmani Grandal who has hit 3 HRs and 16 RBIs as well as Matt Kemp who has 3 HRs and 10 RBIs, but outside of Yasmani Grandal and Matt Kemp, the Dodgers have been nothing special. Cody Bellinger wowed all of Los Angeles last year in his rookie campaign as he won rookie of the year with 39 HRs and 97 RBIs, but 2018 hasn’t been kind to Bellinger as he enters this series with only 3 HRs and 8 RBIs. Rich Hill was a solid starter for the Dodgers in 2017 as an end of the rotation guy, but Hill has struggled in 2018 as he has taken the bump 3 times this season in which he is posting an ERA of 6.00. Another unusual problem for the Dodgers has been the inconsistency from closer Kenley Jansen who has been surehanded for the Dodgers over the last 9 seasons, but in 2018 Jansen has a 6.23 ERA to go along with 2 blown saves.
How Miami Marlins & Los Angeles Dodgers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Miami is 5-16, 2-7 on the road.
Los Angeles is 10-10, 6-6 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Trevor Richards (0-2, 6.16 ERA) for the Miami Marlins vs. Clayton Kershaw (1-3, 2.45 ERA) for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Richards last started on 4/20 against the Brewers where he went 3.2 innings giving up 5 earned runs on 5 hits in a L.
Kershaw last started on 4/20 against the Nationals where he went 7 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 9 hits in a L.
Los Angeles ranks middle of the pack in runs scored while Miami sits in the bottom 10.
Los Angeles ranks inside the top 10 in team ERA while Miami sits in the bottom 3.
Against The Spread Selection: Los Angeles Dodgers
My reason for the pick :
Clayton Kershaw has been one of the best pitchers ever since he entered the MLB and despite his record, Kershaw has still been pretty good. Kershaw as in a pitchers duel last go around as he went up against Max Scherzer, but this one is far from a duel as Richards has been awful this year for Miami and I expect the incompetent offense of LA to come alive in this one. Dodgers close out the series with a win.
