New York Mets vs St. Louis Cardinals

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting New York Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals will resume on Wednesday at Busch Field in St. Louis, Missouri, at 8:15 pm EST.  Currently, the Mets occupy the top spot in the NL East division while the Cards are ranked 1st place in the NL central division.  This series will be the 2nd meeting of the 2018 season as the Mets won the series 2-1 at Met Life Stadium on opening weekend.  In addition, the Cardinals have won 6 of the last 10 games at Busch Field.

New York Mets 's Latest Performance :

The St. Louis Cardinals started the season on slowly, losing 7 of their first 12 games.  However, since this stretch, the Cards have woken out of their slumber as they are now winners of 7 of their last 8 games.  During this stretch, aside from tying a 2-game series with the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals swept the Cincinnati Reds while on playing very well early on in the last weekend’s series, once again, against the Cincinnatti Reds.  In their last 7 wins, St. Louis has outscored their opponents 40-18, and plan to continue this consistency offensively and defensively against a team that they have had some success with in the past.

For the season, the Cardinals are averaging 4.60 runs per game (14th) with a team batting average of .241 (15th), with 28 homers (3rd) along with 12 stolen bases (9th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.41 (7th) with 172 k’s (17th), along with 9 quality starts this season (12th).

Jose Martinez (.338 BA on 71 AB), Tommy Pham (.318 BA on 66 AB), and Yadier Molina (.292 BA on 72 AB) have been the tip of the spear in leading the Cardinal’s offensive attack for 2018.  Paul DeJong (.250 BA on 72 AB) and Marcell Ozuna (.247 BA on 81 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far for St. Louis.

Carlos Martinez (2-1) has pitched 31.2 innings thus far allowing 6 runs on 19 hits, 1 homer, 17 walks, and 37 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.42 while Michael Wacha (3-1) has pitched 21.1 innings while allowing 10 runs on 15 hits, 2 homers, 11 walks, and 15 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.22.  Luke Weaver (2-1) has pitched 21.1 innings also while allowing 10 runs on 21 hits, 1 homer, 6 walks, and 20 k’s this season with an ERA of 4.22.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

The NY Mets began this season winning 12 of their first 14 games, however, they have begun to float back to earth these days losing 4 of their last 6 games.  Their slide was a result of subpar series performances against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Atlanta Braves which they both lost 2 games to 1.  Despite their early season mini-slide, the Mets continue to remain dangerous offensively.  Their ability to win games can also be attributed to their pitching staff who has been solid this season.  It is for this reason that they have been able to weather the storm when a bout of offensive inconsistency has reared its head.

For the year, the Mets are averaging 4.80 runs per game (11th) with a team batting average of .238 (17th), 19 homers (23rd), along with 8 stolen bases (22nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.61 (11th) with 212 strikeouts (3rd) along with 7 quality starts (18th).

Asdrubal Cabrera (.354 BA on 79 AB), Todd Frazier (.258 BA on 66 AB), Amed Rosario (.250 BA on 60 AB), and Michael Conforto (.213 BA on 47 AB) have been the most consistent batters within the Mets lineup this season.  On the other hand, Jacob deGrom (2-0) has pitched 32 innings while allowing 10 runs on 25 hits, 2 homers, 8 walks, and 40 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.53 while Noah Syndergaard (2-0) has 27.1 innings to his credit while allowing 12 runs on 24 hits, 3 homers, 5 walks, and 29 K’s on the year with an ERA of 3.29.  Matt Harvey (0-2) has struggled thus far pitching 21 innings while allowing 14 runs on 26 hits, 4 homers, 4 walks, and 17 strikeouts.

How New York Mets & St. Louis Cardinals Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the NY Mets are 12-8 ATS with the O/U being 10-10 while the St. Louis Cardinals are 11-8 with the O/U being 8-10-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Mets have struggled a bit entering this matchup.  Their offense has been a bit slow to rev up, however, they possess the type of pitching staff that can hunker down in which to provide the offense time to wear down opposing pitchers.  St. Louis, on the other hand, comes into the matchup on fire and look to carry this momentum into yet another all-important National League matchup.  Interestingly enough, the Cardinals are only 3-4 ATS at home this year while the NY Mets are 7-2 on the road in 2018.   This will be a great matchup in that it will pit together a team that has been on a slide in the past week, yet has played stellar on the road all season, against a surging team that has not played particularly well at home.  The Mets pitching staff will need to perform in this series for the Mets to have a legit chance at getting a favorable series result.  The Cardinals, on the other hand, must be able to score runs in hopes that they can better neutralize the hitters for New York.

Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals

My reason for the pick :

As mentioned, the Cardinals have not played well at home this season, however, the fact remains that they have certainly turned the tide on their season during their current winning stretch.  In all, the Mets remain a dangerous team, yet, I see the Cardinals dominating in this matchup despite how stellar the Mets have played on the road.  Besides, the Mets have not played well at Busch Stadium in recent meetings.  It is for this reason that I will lean on the Cardinals to get the job done in game 2.
