Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Oakland Athletics vs Texas Rangers

The Oakland Athletics will continue their 3-game set against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas, beginning at 8:05 pm, EST, in what will be a game 2 matchup.  While the Oakland A’s occupy the 4th spot in the AL West division, the Rangers are currently in last place within the division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year between these two squads with both teams splitting a 4-game set at Oakland Alameda Coliseum early in the season.  For this 4-game set, the O/U was 0-3-1.  The Athletics have won 10 of the last 14 contest against the Rangers, yet, are only 2-5 at Globe Life Park in their last 7 meetings.

Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :

The Texas Rangers also had a slow start to the season; However, with Oakland being able to gain more consistency and pick up some wins, the Rangers have been the total opposite.  Texas enter this game losers of 8 of their last 11 games to where the O/U was 6-5.  In fact, the Rangers have lost their last 5 home games overall.  After playing well against the Houston Astros last weekend, the Rangers slid back into mediocrity by losing the series to the Tampa Bay Rays early last week while losing at home to the Seattle Mariners 6-2 in game 1 on Friday followed by a 9-7 game 2 loss on Saturday.

For the season, Texas has been terrible both on offense and defense as they are only averaging 3.33 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .228 (23rd), with 22 homers (11th), and 4 stolen bases (30th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.55 (21st) with   172 strikeouts (13th) with 5 quality starts on the year (28th).

Nomar Mazara (.301 BA on 73 AB) and Adrian Beltre (.288 BA on 73 AB) have been the most consistent players within the Texas Ranger lineup thus far in the season.  Furthermore, Shin-Soo Choo (.238 BA on 80 AB) and Joey Gallo (.202 BA on 84 AB) have also been solid for the Rangers at the plate.

The pitching staff has been shaky as well with Mike Minor (1-1) being the most consistent as he has pitched 21 innings and allowing 9 runs on 16 hits, 2 homers, 6 walks, and 20 strikeouts for an ERA of 3.86 for the year.  Cole Hamels (1-3) has had an inconsistent campaign thus far pitching 28 innings and allowing 17 runs on 30 hits, 11 walks, 7 home runs, and 34 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.76.

Texas Rangers's Latest Performance :

The Oakland Athletics has had to deal with a string of losses to start the season, however, they have been able to become more consistent recently.  In fact, the A’s are currently winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was at 4-1.  The Athletics were solid against a terrible White Sox squad last week as they swept the series at home.  Furthermore, they took this momentum into their 3-game series against the Boston Red Sox but lost 7-3 in game 1.  Nonetheless, the Athletics would prevail in game 2 by a score of 3-0 on Saturday night.  In all, Oakland needs more consistency on both sides of the ball and attempting to perfect upon this much-needed aspect against a Texas team that has been hot and cold all season can potentially be beneficial.

For the season, Oakland has been on fire offensively lately, averaging 5.35 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .270 (2nd), 26 homers (6th), and 4 stolen bases on the year (29th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.75 (24th) with 142 strikeouts (18th) with 5 quality starts on the season (27th).

Jed Lowrie (.372 Ba on 86 AB), Matt Chapman (.293 BA on 75 AB), Matt Olson (.286 BA on 77 AB), and Stephen Piscotty (.282 BA on 71 AB) have spearheaded the Athletics’ offensive attack this year.  Jonathan Lucroy (.268 BA on 56 AB), Khris Davis (.259 BA on 81 AB), Marcus Semien (.241 BA on 87 AB), along with Matt Joyce (.241 BA on 54 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.

Sean Manaea (2-2) has been the most consistent on the Athletics’ pitching staff this year pitching 27.2 innings while allowing only 5 runs on 16 hits, 4 walks, 4 homers, and 20 strikeouts for an ERA of 1.63.  Daniel Mengden (2-2) has also been relatively solid in pitching 24 innings and allowing 15 runs on 25 hits, 2 homers, 3 walks, and 18 strikeouts on the year.

How Oakland Athletics & Texas Rangers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Oakland Athletics are 10-11 ATS while the O/U is 12-8-1.  On the other hand, the Texas Rangers are 7-15 ATS while the O/U is 10-11-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

On one hand, Oakland looks to pick up some victories against a team that has essentially struggled all season long.  While playing on the road this year has not exactly had favorable results for Oakland, they will look to turn the tide beginning with their series with Texas.  On the other hand, the Rangers simply would like to string some wins together in which to gain more confidence while increasing their position within a very competitive division.  Interestingly enough, Texas has been an even weaker squad at home in Arlington which is certainly a trend that the Rangers will look to change beginning with their matchup with the Athletics.

The Over has been the play in 4 of the last 5 games for the Oakland Athletics while the Rangers have lost their last 5 games at home and 7 of their last 10 games overall to where the O/U was 5-5.

Against The Spread Selection: Oakland Athletics

My reason for the pick :

There is no denying that the Texas Rangers are simply not a good team at all right now.  Their struggles on offense and defense are certainly evident and this will illustrate itself early on in their series against Oakland.  Oakland, on the other hand, while they have dropped several games thus far, has really attempted to right the ship lately by winning 4 of their last 5 games.  This should certainly give them a fair share of motivation heading into this series.  Combine this with the fact that the Rangers consistently under-perform at home, I fully expect Oakland to show and prove in this series and pick up some much-needed wins.
