Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Seattle Mariners vs Chicago White Sox

The Seattle Mariners will continue their 3-game set against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday at 5:10 pm EST at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.  Currently, the Seattle Mariners occupy the 3rd place spot within the AL West division while the Chicago White Sox are 4th place within the AL Central division ahead of only the slumping Kansas City Royals.  This series will be the first of the year amongst these two teams, however, the Mariners have been owned by the White Sox in the past as they have only won 4 of their last 11 meetings.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

The Mariners had a decent start to the 2018 campaign.  In fact, they were winners of 8 of their first 12 games, however, they recently fell on hard time losing 4 of their last 6 games to where the O/U was 2-4 during this stretch.  The Mariners had won consecutive series against Kansas City and Oakland, yet, ran into a hot Houston Astros squad last week and, despite picking up a win in game 1 of the series, dropped the series 3-1 to the defending champs.  Colorado has struggled on both sides of the ball this season, but their pitching has certainly been an added Achilles heel night in and night out.

For the season, the Mariners are averaging 4.11 runs per game (18th) with a team batting average of .249 (8th), 19 homers (22nd) along with 14 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has certainly been inconsistent on the year with an ERA of 4.53 (20th) with 157 strikeouts (20th) along with 6 quality starts (25th).

Robinson Cano (.311 BA on 61 AB), Dee Gordon (.307 BA on 75 AB), Jean Segura (.303 BA on 76 AB), and Mitch Haniger (.290 BA on 62 AB) have been solid at the plate for the Mariners thus far.  Kyle Seager (.246 BA on 69 AB) has also been pivotal to Seattle’s success this season.

Pitching for the Mariners have certainly not been their strong point, there are individuals within their staff that have performed well in 2018.  Mike Leake (2-1) has pitched 24 innings while allowing 12 runs on 22 hits, 3 homers, 10 walks, and 15 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.50 while James Paxton (1-1) has pitched 21.2 innings while allowing 11 runs on 19 hits, 4 homers, 9 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.57 for the season.  Finally, former All-Star Felix Hernandez (2-2) has pitched 26.2 innings this year while allowing 15 runs on 23 hits, 5 homers, 10 walks, and 20 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.06.

Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :

After winning their first 2 games of the year in a 2-0 series win over the Kansas City Royals, the White Sox have certainly lost their way losing 12 of their next 14 games.  In fact, since the 2-game series win over the Royals, the White Sox have not won a series since.  During this awful stretch, they were swept by Detroit and Oakland while losing 2-1 to Tampa Bay and Toronto.  They are losers of 5-straight at this point in the season and longing to get back into the win column.  This will not be easy as they have played some of their worst outings of the season at Guaranteed Rate Field this season.

The White Sox are averaging 3.88 runs per game (21st) with a team batting average of .230 (22nd), 20 home runs (16th), and 19 stolen bases (2nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.91 (30th) with 127 strikeouts (30th) with 6 quality starts on the year (20th).

Jose Abreu (.275 BA on 69 AB) and Nicky Delmonico (.265 BA on 49 AB) have spearheaded the White Sox offensive charge this season.  On the other hand, Yolmer Sanchez (.254 BA on 59 AB) and Tim Anderson (.238 BA on 63 AB) has been solid at the plate this season for Chicago as well.

Again, it has been a disastrous year as it relates to White Sox pitching is concerned with Reynaldo Lopez (0-2) pitching 19 innings while allowing 4 runs on 8 hits, 2 homers, 11 walks, and 21 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.42 while James Shields (1-2) has pitched 23.1 innings while allowing 16 runs on 27 hits, 1 homer, 13 walks, and 11 strikeouts with an ERA of 6.17.  Lucas Giolito (0-3) has pitched 20 innings while allowing 21 runs on 18 hits, 1 homer, 19 walks, and 9 strikeouts this season.

How Seattle Mariners & Chicago White Sox Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Seattle Mariners are 11-8 ATS while the O/U is 12-7.  On the other hand, the Chicago White Sox are 4-13 ATS and 10-7 O/U thus far.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both these teams possess average to horrible pitching staffs.  In addition, they both commit a slew of errors as apparent by their MLB rankings (Sea-20th/CWS-27th).  Combine this with the fact that both teams are severely offensively challenged, one could surmise that one team will certainly be in position to gain some real momentum from this series while the other will sink further into the abyss of their respective division.  In the Mariners last 4 losses, they were outscored by a total of 22-5.  On the other hand, during the White Sox’ 6 game skid they were heavily outscored to the tune of 46-13.  In all, I feel that the Mariners certainly have the edge and the overall incentive to excel in this matchup as they are chasing the red-hot Angels along with the champs in the Houston Astros.  Picking up wins against a subpar White Sox team can certainly help their cause.

Against The Spread Selection: Seattle Mariners

My reason for the pick :

Could anyone who has observed the way in which the White Sox have been playing recently and feel as if they would feel confident in backing them?  Granted, Seattle has not necessarily been lighting it up on offense or have been as consistent as they should be lately, altogether; Nonetheless, the fact remains that, despite their apparent troubles, the Mariners continue to be a much better team than the White Sox at this point in the season.  Combine that with the fact that the Mariners have really played well away from home this season, I will say that this will continue Tuesday against a slumping White Sox team that seemingly cannot stop their persistent bleeding in 2018.
