Seattle Mariners vs Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are looking to cap off their 6 game homestand as they will host American League foe in the Seattle Mariners. Chicago is looking to get back on track after a rough couple of weeks. Seattle has enjoyed an average year as they are above .500 but will look to develop a win streak and catch up in the AL West race.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

Tighten Up Starters

The Seattle Mariners were able to rebound nicely in the last series against the Texas Rangers as they took 2 out of the 3 games but again similar to the Houston series the problem lies in their starters. Before this last series, Texas struggled in both areas of the game as they were giving up a ton of runs as well as receiving no help from their bats which lead to some ugly games. The Seattle Mariners were able to enjoy a wealthy amount of runs especially in their 4/21 matchup where they put up 9 runs on 13 hits. The Mariners enjoyed production from 5 out of their top 6 guys in the lineup as Jean Segura, Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, and Mitch Haniger each had 2 RBIs apiece while their leadoff hitter in Dee Gordon contributed the other RBI. The story arises though as one of their best starters in James Paxton struggled to find consistency from the mound as he was only able to last 4 innings after giving up 5 runs on 6 hits. The Mariners need to get their rotation back on track if they have hopes to compete in the AL West as their two top guys in the rotation in Felix Hernandez and James Paxton both have over a 5.00 ERA. On the hitting end of things, the Mariners want to make sure Mitch Haniger stays hot as he leads the Mariners in HRs (7) and RBIs (22) as well as bats .314.

Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :

No Pitching, No Hitting, No Wins

The Chicago White Sox weren’t on many peoples radar as a team that will do some harm this season and we can see why that’s the case as they just got steamrolled in 3 games against the defending champions. The White Sox entered their series against Houston on a 4 game skid as it was, but they did themselves no good as they got outscored in the 3 game series 27-2. A problem for the White Sox this season has been their starting pitching as outside of Reynaldo Lopez the combination of Luis Giolito, Carson Fulmer, James Shields, and Miguel Gonzalez are posting a record of 1-9 with an ERA of 8.77. The White Sox cannot win any games if their starters are on average giving up around 8 runs a game. One of their best hitters in DH Matt Davidson has taken a backseat as of recent as he started the year off as hot as any guy in the MLB, but in the last 15 games, Davidson has struggled to reach base as he is batting .167.  Another guy who has struggled to find his swing this season is the 2nd year outfielder in Adam Engel as he only has 5 hits in his last 42 ABs which is not a recipe for success especially out of a guy who is in the daily starting lineup. The White Sox will want to make sure that these young guys keep developing their game and keep gaining confidence in their play against good teams.

How Seattle Mariners & Chicago White Sox Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Seattle is 11-9, 6-4 on the road.

Chicago is 4-14, 1-8 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Felix Hernandez (2-2, 5.06 ERA) for the Seattle Mariners vs. James Shields (1-2, 6.17 ERA) for the Chicago White Sox.

Hernandez last started on 4/20 against the Rangers where he went 5.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits in a ND.

Shields last started on 4/20 against the Astros where he went 5.1 innings giving up 7 earned runs on 8 hits in a L.

Seattle and Chicago both rank in the bottom half in team runs.

Seattle ranks in the bottom 10 in ERA while Chicago ranks last.

Against The Spread Selection: Seattle Mariners

My reason for the pick :

The Mariners bats have heated up as of recent and they get to go against a pitcher who is way past his prime and has shown his age this year. Shields gave up 7 earned runs last start and I trust King Felix way more regardless of the way Hernandez has pitched this season. Seattle should keep their bats going against the worst pitching team in the MLB.

Betting trends for Seattle Mariners:

  • Seattle is 39-22 as the road favorite since 2016.

  • The over is 13-7 this season.

Betting trends for Chicago White Sox:

  • Chicago is 2-10 against teams outside the AL Central.

  • The over is 8-4-1 after a loss this season.
