Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Atlanta Braves vs Cincinnati Reds

The finale of a 4-game set between the visiting Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds will take place on Thursday at 12:35 pm EST at the Great American Ball Park, in Cincinnati, Ohio.  The Atlanta Braves occupy the 3rd spot in the NL East division while the Reds occupy last place in the AL Central division.  This will be the 1st matchup of the 2018 season amongst these two teams, however, the Reds have won 7 of the last 12 games, with both teams splitting the last 6 games at Great American Ball Park.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Reds have not been able to accomplish much of anything this season.  They not only began the season losing 8 of their first 10, but, they have since been losers of 5 of their last 6 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  While the Reds possess potent hitters that can be dangerous, Cincy has not been able to get timely hits at critical points in the game from others within the lineup.  As a result, they continue to lose game in and game out.  They will, however, try once again in which to gain some much-needed momentum against the surging Braves.

The Cincinnati Reds are averaging 2.90 runs per game (30th) with a team batting average (27th), 11 home runs (30th), along with 9 stolen bases (18th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.55 (28th) with 153 k’s (26th), and 6 quality starts (22nd).

Jesse Winker (.283 BA on 53 AB), Scooter Gennett (.271 BA on 85 AB), Tucker Barnhart (.255 BA on 55 AB), and Joey Votto (.243 BA on 74 AB) have been valuable to the offense this year.  Jose Peraza (.233 BA on 73 AB) has also been a pivotal piece in the offensive puzzle for the Reds.

Homer Bailey (0-3) has pitched 29.1 innings for the Reds while allowing 13 runs on 24 hits, 4 homers, 10 walks, and 20 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.68 while Tyler Mahle has pitched 21 innings and has allowed 12 runs on 26 hits, 5 homers, 7 walks, and 20 strikeouts along with an ERA of 5.14.  Finally, Luis Castillo (1-3) has pitched 27 innings while allowing 20 runs on 29 hits, 5 home runs, 11 walks, and 24 strikeouts with an ERA of 6.51.

Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :

The Braves have had a decent season despite a loss here and there.  During this young season, the Braves have not lost more than 2 straight games and have won each of its series except 1, which came against the Washington Nationals earlier in the month.  Currently, the Tribe has won 3 of their last 5 games, however, each of those games were at home where they are .500 for the season.

For the season, the Braves ae averaging 5.55 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .266 (3rd), 20 home runs (19th), along with 14 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.23 (6th) with 196 strikeouts (10th) and 9 quality starts (10th).

Ryan Flaherty (.362 BA on 58 AB), Dansby Swanson (.342 BA on 79 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.302 BA on 86 AB) have risen tot eh occasion for the Atlanta Braves this year.  Freddie Freeman (.296 BA on 71 AB), Nick Markakis (.278 BA on 79 AB), Preston Tucker (.262 BA on 61 AB), and Ender Inciarte (.241 BA on 83 AB) have also been critical to the Braves success this season.

How Atlanta Braves & Cincinnati Reds Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, Atlanta Braves are 13-7 ATS while the O/U is 8-9-3.  On the other hand, the Cincinnati Reds are 7-13 ATS while the O/U is 8-12.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will have too different types of hungry teams:  One who will be motivated to continue their recent success in stringing together wins as opposed to a team who is motivated simply to get a win, period.  In other words, the Braves will be looking to win 4 out of their last 6, while the Reds will be looking to win 2-in a row after recently ending a horrendous 5-game losing streak.  So, while the Braves will look to maintain the focus needed in which to come out victorious against a lowly team such as the Reds, the Reds will attempt to follow the same type of blueprint in hopes of righting the ship and setting a positive precedent for how the season can progress.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

The Braves have truly become a dangerous team thus far in the season.  Most importantly, their overall team focus seems to be exactly where it needs to be in that they have not lost consecutive games all season.  Once again, the Cincinnati Reds will certainly be outdueled in all facets of the game, thus allowing the Atlanta Braves to continue their inspired and stellar play.  Depending on how the Braves perform in game 1, I can certainly see a sweep for the remainder of this series.
