Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Detroit Tigers vs Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to close out their home series against the Detroit Tigers in game 3 of a 3 game interleague matchup. The Tigers and Pirates both sit in the middle of their respective divisions. The Pirates will look to climb back up the standings after a couple of bad series have set them back in the NL Central. The Tigers may not make the playoffs, but they are playing above expectations as they were a candidate for last place.
Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :
The Tigers will most likely not have an all-star on their squad this year and when you look at the stat sheet no one truly lights it up, but the Tigers sit around the .500 mark which is good enough for this young Tigers team. One guy who was supposed to excel for the Tigers this season is 10-year starter, Jordan Zimmermann which has not happened. Zimmermann was once a guy who was posting consistent winning seasons as through the 2013 & 2014 seasons Zimmermann played with Washington and had a combined record of 33-14, but his time in Detroit has not been really good. Zimmermann has started 4 games this season and all 4 starts have not been pretty as he has an ERA of 7.71 and a WHIP of 1.59. The Tigers are also struggling in hitting the ball deep as they sit in the bottom 3 in HRs as they don’t boost a bunch of big-name sluggers. The two guys who have molded themselves into this Tigers organization over the last decade in Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera have shown their age in 2018 as they have not shown the same power they once had. Martinez and Cabrera have combined for 702 HRs over the course of their lengthy careers but the duo enters this series with only 3 HRs. The Tigers will look to build on their recent success against the Royals and Orioles and translate it into wins against better teams.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
Relievers Causing Pirates To Fall
The Pittsburgh Pirates started off as one of the best teams in the MLB as they sprung out to a huge lead in the NL Central, but the Pirates enter this series losers in 7 out of the last 10 games which have the Pirates only .5 games above the 4th place Cubs. Pittsburgh at one point was one of the top teams in the MLB in terms of scoring runs, but a lack of runs has the Pirates falling all the way down to #10. The Pirates may have lost a little pop in their bat, but that has not been the main problem as of recent as the relievers for the Pirates have been awful. The Pirates have 6 guys out of the bullpen who see the majority of innings for the Pirates as Josh Smoker, Tyler Glasnow, Dovydas Neverauskas, Edgar Santana, Felipe Vazquez, and Michael Feliz have seen 48.2 innings. Those 48.2 innings have been a disaster for the most part as the 6 relievers combine for an ERA of 6.95 which is not what you want out of guys who only need to give you 2-3 innings a game. The Pirates will also need to get more production out of their slugger Gregory Polanco who leads the team in HRs and RBIs, but bats under .200. Polanco has given the Pirates 5 HRs and 15 RBIs, but outside of his 5 HRs Polanco only has 10 other hits in 76 ABs which has Polanco at a .197.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates
My reason for the pick :
The Pirates were one of the best teams to start the season but a skid in Philadelphia has set this team back. The Pirates will be happy to return back home to PNC and they have a solid pitcher on the mound in Nova. Nova has been pretty good for the Pirates this year and I expect him to dominate the powerless offense in Detroit. Pirates win at home.
