Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
New York Mets vs St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to close out another home series as they will host the New York Mets in game 3 of a 3 game series. Both teams have enjoyed good seasons as they both sit at the top of their divisions. These two teams last met for the opening series where the Mets won the series 2-1.
New York Mets's Latest Performance :
The New York Mets started off the season as good as anyone in the MLB, but over the course of the last 2 weeks the Mets have cooled down as they have been trading wins with losses as they entered this series 5-5 in their last 10 matchups. Matt Harvey looked good in his first start of the season as he went 5 innings giving up only 1 hit which made Met fans believe that the 2016 Harvey was back, but as we have learned that is not the case. Harvey has struggled mightily over his last 3 starts as he now has an ERA of 6.00 and 2 losses which has prompted Mickey Callaway to make the move to send Harvey to the bullpen. The Mets are replacing Harvey with 13-year veteran Jason Vargas who started the year on the DL with an injury in his throwing hand. Vargas should be a major upgrade compared to Harvey as Vargas is coming off a career year in 2017 with the Kansas City Royals as he posted 18 wins and 134 strikeouts. The injury of C Travis d’Arnaud has prompted the Mets to insert third-stringer Kevin Plawecki in the roster who has played sparingly over the last 4 seasons. Plawecki has appeared in the last 7 games where he has only reached base via hit 3 times out of his 20 ABs. The Mets will hope that Plawecki can grow into an offensive player as d’Arnaud gave the Mets another strong bat.Nr

Nice Warm Up Series
The St. Louis Cardinals had the luxury of going up against the Cincinnati Reds before this series which is a major advantage because you don’t only get to pad your stats but gain confidence in your play. The Cardinals were able to take all three games of the series and were able to beat up on the Reds in the last game where they won 9-2. The Cardinals have enjoyed the bat of 2nd year SS Paul DeJong who leads the team with 7 HRs, and he did just what he has done all season against the Reds as he ended the series with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs. DeJong through his first two years has had as he leads the team with 31, but like we talked about DeJong was able to build confidence throughout this series as he struck out 1 time. One guy that the Cardinals want to get back on track is their 2B Kolten Wong who has been a great utility player for the Cards the last few years, and after hitting .285 last year Wong has struggled to find his swing in 2018 as he is only batting .146 which is easily a career low. On the pitching end of things, the starters have been pretty good and although they have a high ERA they combination of Luke Weaver, Carlos Martinez, Miles Mikolas, and Michael Wacha are posting a record of 10-3. The Cardinals need to keep building on the lead that they have taken in the NL Central as the Cubs can heat up at any time and the Brewers have a nice stretch against bottom tier teams.

Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals
My reason for the pick :
This seems like a trap game because on paper the Mets have the better record with the better pitcher, but Martinez has been one of the best starters in all of the MLB this year as he is not giving up very many runs. The Cardinals have also started to find their footing as they have been rolling as of recent where the Mets have been nothing spectacular. Cardinals win.
