Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Tampa Bay Rays vs Baltimore Orioles
The finale of a 3-game set between the AL East’s Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles will take place at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, at 7:05 pm EST. Currently, the Tampa Bay Rays occupy the 4th spot in the AL East division while the Baltimore Orioles are last place within the division. This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, the Orioles have dominated at home in head-to-head matchups in winning 10 of the last 15 games to where the O/U was 9-6.
Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :
The Tampa Bay Rays have had a disastrous season thus far as they came out of the starting gates losing 16 of 20 games. Nevertheless, the Rays have since won 5 of their last 6 contests and gaining enormous amounts of momentum as a result. They are not only coming off a sweep against the Minnesota Twins 3-0, but, prior to that series they won a 3-game set against the Texas Rangers 2-1. Their bats have been heating up as well, thus increasing their scoring margins per game. In their current 4-game winning streak, the Rays are outscoring their opponents 30-16. They hope to continue this play against a Baltimore team that has consistently been inconsistent throughout the year.
The Rays are averaging 4.19 runs per game (19th) with a team batting average of .251 (10th), 16 homers (27th), along with 12 stolen bases on the year (10th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.76 (25th) with 176 strikeouts (17th) and 5 quality starts (29th).
Mallex Smith (.344 BA on 61 AB), Joey Wendle (.304 BA on 56 AB) Adeiny Hechavarria (.275 BA on 69 AB) spearhead the offensive attack from the plate for the O’s while C.J. Cron (.273 BA on 77 AB) and Denard Span (.259 BA on 15 AB) are also critical to the Baltimore offense.
Blake Snell (3-1) has pitched 28.1 innings this season and allowed 8 runs on 18 hits, 3 homers, 10 walks, and 32 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.54. Yonny Chirinos (0-1) has pitched 24.2 innings while allowing 8 runs on 19 hits, 2 home runs, 7 walks, and 21 strikeouts while Chris Archer (1-1) has pitched 27.1 while allowing a whopping 21 runs on 30 pitches, 5 homers, 10 walks, 29 strikeouts with an ERA of 6.59 for the season.
Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :
The Orioles have had a rough season thus far. On one hand, they began the season losing 6 of 10 while currently are losers of 7 of their last 8 games. The only series that they have won all year long has been their 3-games road series against the Yankees which they won 2 games to 1. However, they were swept by Detroit, Boston, and Houston this season. They have really had their troubles on offense during their current losing streak as their opponents have outscored them 53-23. They look to reverse the trends at home against a Rays team that has struggled on the year, also.
For the season, Baltimore is averaging 3.27 runs per game (28th) with a team batting average of .215 (30th), 23 home runs (10th), and 7 stolen bases (24th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.95 (26th) with 183 k’s (13th) along with 9 quality starts (10th).
Manny Machado (.356 BA on 87 AB) and Trey Mancini (.284 BA on 81 AB) are the offensive leaders for the Baltimore Orioles. Also, Adam Jones is also a pivotal component within the offense as well with a batting average of .239 on 92 at bats this season.
Dylan Bundy (1-2) has pitched 31.2 innings this season while allowing 8 runs on 26 hits, 1 homer, 9 walks, and 40 strikeouts on the year with an ERA of 1.42. Andrew Cashner has also pitched 30 or more innings for the Orioles and has allowed 13 runs on 27 hits, 6 home runs, 13 walks, and 28 strikeouts along with an ERA of 3.60 thus far.
How Tampa Bay Rays & Baltimore Orioles Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Tampa Bay Rays are 11-10 ATS while the O/U is 14-7. On the other hand, the Baltimore Orioles are 7-15 ATS and the O/U is 10-12.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup will pit two teams together that are both looking for wins in which to either continue their current hot streak or to halt an immediate and potentially damaging losing streak. Tampa Bay is really playing great suddenly as they come into Camden Yards fresh off their first sweep of the season. On the other hand, it is more of the same for the Orioles as they have lost 4 of their last 5 (2-straight) as the O/U has gone 3-2. The Orioles have been terrible at home this season; However, they will be looking to exert the focus necessary to change their fortunes against a surging Rays squad.
Against The Spread Selection: Tampa Bay Rays
My reason for the pick :
The Rays are simply the better team at this point of the season. With a series win, it would be safe to say that the Rays will be surging while battling back from a(n) horrendous start to the season. Besides, while the Orioles possess the hitters needed in which to get this win, I do not have much confidence in them getting it done in this matchup due to their lackluster play and awful record at home. I will choose the Rays to extend their win streak against the lowly Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
