Arizona Diamondbacks vs Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals are happy to return back to D.C. after a rough West Coast visit as they will host the best team in the National League in the Arizona Diamondbacks in game 1 of a 3 game series. These teams will meet again in Arizona for a 4 game series on 5/10.
Arizona Diamondbacks 's Latest Performance :
Best Rotation In Baseball
The Arizona Diamondbacks have rebounded off their 93 win season very nicely to start the 2018 season as they find themselves with the best record on the National League side of things. If you look at the makeup of this Diamondbacks roster you may be caught by surprise when you hear their record as they don’t boost very man household names. The Diamondbacks have been really good on the pitching end of things this season as they have one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball to be followed up by some solid relievers. The ace for this ballclub in Patrick Corbin has done ace like things as he is already on the Cy Young watch list as well as lining up to be one of the best free agents this upcoming offseason. Corbin entered this series with one of the best records as well as leads the MLB in strikeouts as he currently posts a 4-0 record with 48 strikeouts. After Corbin, the Diamondbacks have another good arm in Robbie Ray who is coming off a career year in 2017 as he posted a career-best record of 15-5 with a 2.89 ERA. Ray has been good through his first 5 starts as he is 2-0 and right behind Corbin in strikeouts with 43, but if there was one flaw in Ray’s game it has to be his inconsistency in terms of keeping teams off the scoreboard. Ray currently leads all Diamondbacks in ERA as he is posting a 5.13 which is not going to get a team who is iffy on the offensive end very far.
Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :
Banged Up Nationals Struggling
The Washington Nationals have been one of biggest surprises of the young 2018 season and it’s not in a good way as the Nationals currently find themselves in 4th place in the NL East. The Nationals have made it to the MLB playoffs 4 out of the last 6 seasons, and even though the season is still young you have to become worried due to the success of the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Atlanta Braves who have all exceeded expectations. The Nationals first order of business will be to become healthy as they have 4 starters on the DL in Daniel Murphy, Anthony Rendon, Adam Eaton, and Brian Goodwin as all 4 guys are vital pieces in the Nationals success. Another problem is the lack of production from one of their veterans in 14-year slugger Ryan Zimmerman who is coming off the best year in his lengthy career. Zimmerman in 2017 had a career-high with 36 HRs and was also able to contribute 108 RBIs with an ERA of .303, but 2018 has not been as favorable as he is batting sub .200 with a .188 and only has 3 HRs. A bright spot other than the typical Bryce Harper stat line is the base running for Trea Turner and Michael A. Taylor who have been a problem for opposing pitchers when they reach base safely as they both have 9 steals apiece entering this series.
How Arizona Diamondbacks & Washington Nationals Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Arizona is 16-6, 7-3 on the road.
Washington is 10-14, 3-7 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Zach Godley (3-1, 3.09 ERA) for the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Stephen Strasburg (2-2, 2.97 ERA) for the Washington Nationals.
Godley last started on 4/21 against the Padres where he went 5.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits in a W.
Strasburg last started on 4/21 against the Dodgers where he went 7 innings striking out 10 guys in a L.
Arizona and Washington both rank in the bottom 15 in runs scored.
Arizona ranks in the top 3 in team ERA while Washington ranks in the bottom 15.
Against The Spread Selection: Arizona Diamondbacks
My reason for the pick :
Strasburg has pitched lights out for the Nationals this season, but due to their team inconsistencies find himself with a .500 record. Godley on the other hand has also enjoyed a very good year and its showing in his stat line and with a Nationals team who is struggling to find wins and runs I think Godley is able to go 7 strong innings to help propel Arizona to a win.
