Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies will take place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Friday beginning at 7:05 pm EST.  Currently, the Atlanta Braves along with the Phillies represent the 2nd (Phillies) and 3rd place teams in the NL East.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams with the Atlanta Braves taking the 2-1 series win at home on 3/31.  In recent matchups, the Braves have won 6 of the last 9 against the Phillies.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

Despite some recent losses, the Braves continue to power on with some motivation in which to carry into the next game/series.  They have not only played well against a Phillies team in winning the series 2-1 on 4/18, they were also impressive against the New York Mets in taking the 2-1 lead in a 4-game set to where the finale was postponed.  They did, however, took a lost on the road in a 3-game set with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night by a score of 10-4.  In addition, on Tuesday night, the Braves dropped yet another matchup against the Reds by a score of 9-7.

For the season, the Braves ae averaging 5.55 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .266 (3rd), 20 home runs (19th), along with 14 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.23 (6th) with 196 strikeouts (10th) and 9 quality starts (10th).

Ryan Flaherty (.362 BA on 58 AB), Dansby Swanson (.342 BA on 79 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.302 BA on 86 AB) have risen tot eh occasion for the Atlanta Braves this year.  Freddie Freeman (.296 BA on 71 AB), Nick Markakis (.278 BA on 79 AB), Preston Tucker (.262 BA on 61 AB), and Ender Inciarte (.241 BA on 83 AB) have also been critical to the Braves success this season.

Mike Foltynewicz (1-1) has pitched 26 innings while allowing 10 runs on 21 hits, 3 homers, 13 walks, and 33 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.77 while Brandon McCarthy (3-0) has pitched 21.2 innings while allowing 7 runs on 20 hits, 2 homers, 8 walks, and 18 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.91.  Sean Newcomb (1-1) has pitched 21.2 innings as well while allowing 12 runs on 22 hits, 2 homers, 11 walks, and 27 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.74.  Julio Tehran (1-1) has pitched 27 innings while allowing 12 runs on 24 hits, 5 homers, 14 walks, and 27 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.00 on the year.

Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :

The Philadelphia Phillies come into this matchup winners of 5 of their last 6 games to where the O/U was 1-3-2.  They are coming off a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 4-game set on 4/22 and looking to translate that confidence into future wins.  After losing 5 of their first 8 games of the year, Philadelphia has since won 11 of their next 13 games.  In all, the Phillies have really played well all season, enough to represent one of the upper-echelon teams within the National League.

For the season, the Phillies are averaging 5.05 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .230 (22nd), 19 homers (25th), along with 16 stolen bases on the year (4th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.05 (5th) with 182 strikeouts (16th), along with 11 quality starts (5th).

Odubel Herrera (.329 BA on 79 AB), Rhys Hoskins (.323 BA on 65 AB), and Cesar Hernandez (.280 BA on 75 AB) have been the stalwarts for this Phillies offensive attack.  Maikel Franco (.241 BA on 58 Ab) and Scott Kingery .229 BA on 70 AB) are also critical to the Philadelphia offense.

Aaron Nola (2-1) has pitched 31.1 innings this year while allowing 8 runs on 20 hits, 2 homers, 9 walks, and 24 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.30 while Nick Pivetta (1-0) has pitched 28 innings while allowing 8 runs on 24 hits, 1 homer, 4 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.57 for the season.

How Atlanta Braves & Philadelphia Phillies Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Atlanta Braves are 13-8 ATS with the O/U being 9-9-3.  On the other hand, the Phillies are 9-12 while the O/U is 8-10-3.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Despite a couple huge losses by the Braves to the lowly Reds early in their current series, both the Braves and Phillies had both been playing well recently.  In addition, they remain very dangerous teams as they not only possess solid pitching, but, they also have playmakers on offense that can obtain critical hits at any point and time in the contest.  This game will be an interesting matchup simply because both these teams will be focused on continuing their recent success while remining competitive within the gauntlet that is the NL East.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies

My reason for the pick :

While the Braves have struggled a bit against Cincy, they have been just as successful as the Phillies leading into this matchup.  Nonetheless, I feel as though the Phillies will have a slight advantage in this matchup:  Home field.  For the year, the Phillies are 7-2 at Citizens Bank and look to continue this trend starting with a win against a solid Atlanta squad.  Please understand that Atlanta, as they have shown, will make the game interesting, however, it will be the Phillies who will ultimately get the win in this matchup, thus winning their 5th straight game.
