Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Chicago White Sox vs Kansas City Royals
Game 2 of a 4-game set between the visiting Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals will take place at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Friday beginning at 8:15 pm EST. This is the second meeting of the year amongst these two squads with the White Sox prevailing for the sweep in their opening week 2-game home set versus the Royals. In recent matchups, the White Sox have won 8 of their last 12 matchups against the Royals, with the Sox winning 6 of the last 10 at Kauffman Stadium.
Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :
The White Sox began the season by winning their first 2-games of the season while sweeping the Kansas City Royals on the road. This would seemingly be the highest point of the season for Chicago as they preceded to lose 15 of their next 17 games. Nonetheless, they are currently on a 7-game losing streak to where they have been outscored by their opponents 61-16. In other words, the pitching staff needs to shore up their vulnerabilities while the offense needs to wake up for the White Sox to climb out of their season funk.
For the season, the White Sox average 3.56 runs per game (24th) with a team batting average of .228 (23rd), 21 home runs (21st), along with 19 stolen bases (2nd). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 6.20 (30th) wit 142 k’s (29th), along with 6 quality starts on the season (21st).
Yolmer Sanchez (.279 BA on 61 AB), Jose Abreu (.274 BA on 73 AB), and Nicky Delmonico (.245 BA on 73 AB) have spearheaded the White Sox offense throughout the season. Tim Anderson (.239 BA on 67 AB) and Avisail Garcia (.225 BA on 71 AB) have also been important for the White Sox lineup this year.
Reynaoldo Lopez (0-2) has pitched 24 innings and has allowed 5 runs on 12 hits, 2 home runs, 15 walks, and 23 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.50 while James Sheilds (1-2) has pitched 23.1 innings while allowing 16 runs on 27 hits, 1 homer, 13 walks, and 11 strikeouts with an ERA of 6.17. Lucas Giolito (0-3) has pitched 20 innings while allowing 21 runs on 18 hits, 1 home run, 19 walks, and 9 strikeouts with an ERA of 9.00.
Kansas City Royals's Latest Performance :
The Royals come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. Before their last 2-2 tie in a 4-game set at home against the Detroit Tigers this past weekend, the Royals had lost a total of 5 series in a row, with the most recent being against the Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays. They did, however, get the win in the finale of the Detroit series, however, whether their win will play a part in how they approach their next matchup remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the Royals really need to string together some wins in which to gain confidence and momentum.
For the season, the Royals are averaging 3.16 runs per game (28th) with a team batting average of .241 (14th), 13 homers (27th), along with 4 stolen bases (29th). Their pitching staff ranks at the bottom with an ERA of 5.31 (27th) with 134 strikeouts (30th) with 9 quality starts on the year (10th).
Mike Moustakas (.325 BA on 80 AB), Jorge Soler (.280 BA on 50 AB), Whit Merrifield (.270 BA on 74 AB), and Cheslor Cuthbert (.250 BA on 52 AB) have been solid thus far at the plate for Kansas City. Jon Jay (.233 BA on 73 AB) and Lucas Duda (.227 BA on 66 AB) have also provided a small spark to the offense this season.
Jakob Junis (3-1) has been a bright spot for the Royal pitching staff this year going 26.2 innings this year while allowing 6 runs on 15 hits, 3 homers, 5 walks, and 20 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.02. Ian Kennedy (1-2), Jason Hammel (0-1), and Danny Duffy (0-3) have combined for 76.3 innings while allowing 30 runs on 33 hits, 8 homers, 27 walks, and 63 strikeouts with a combined ERA of 3.60.
How Chicago White Sox & Kansas City Royals Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, Chicago white Sox are 7-11 ATS while the O/U is 10-7-1. On the other hand, the Kansas City Royals are 8-12 ATS while the O/U is 7-11-1.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Both these teams can use all the wins they can possibly muster. The problem seems to be that both are not great from an offensive standpoint. On the other hand, their pitching staffs are average at best and cannot stop their opponent from scoring. Though I am sure that both teams will be locked in for this matchup, I can see many runs being scored due to the shakiness of the opposite pitching staffs.
Totals Selection: Over
My reason for the prediction :
I continue to have no confidence at all in either team in this matchup. In other words, they have been much too inconsistent on both sides of the plate, so, I will save myself some time and energy in not even considering backing either at this point. However, the over will certainly be the play in this contest due to, as stated, the inability of both pitching staffs to prevent teams from scoring. Again, when these squads get together, the over can often be the end result. It is for this reason that I will sit back and watch the train wreck that will ensue with a set of shaky pitching staffs get together in a contest where a win is so very critical. Take the over and enjoy the runs as they pour in.
