Colorado Rockies vs Miami Marlins

The last place Miami Marlins return home to the Sunshine State after playing 9 straight road games as they will play host to National League opponent in the Colorado Rockies. This is the first matchup of the year between these two teams and they will not meet again until 6/22 where Miami will travel to Colorado for a 3 game series.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

Story’s Big Game

The Colorado Rockies showed why their home ballpark in Coors Field is one of the best places to get out of a slump as the Rockies were able to explode for 8 runs against the San Diego Padres on 4/24. The Rockies have finally found the bat of their young stud in SS Trevor Story who was able to hit a grand-slam in the bottom of the 2nd inning to help propel the Rockies to a 5 run inning. Trevor Story has been awesome over the last 7 games as he isn’t only batting .350 but has contributed 2 HRs and 9 RBIs which has helped propel him to the top of the Rockies leaderboard in RBIs as he now has 18. The Rockies were also able to find some good pitching out of their 2nd-year starter in Kyle Freeland who entered the 4/24 matchup with a record of 0-3 and an ERA of 5.85. Freeland was able to pitch 7 shutout innings while striking out 8 guys in the process which was easily his best performance on the season as he earned his first win of the year. Another relieving sight was the fact that their reliever Bryan Shaw showed some dominance as he also entered this matchup on a skid. Bryan Shaw was able to strikeout the side in the 1 inning he pitched which moving forward is huge for Shaw’s confidence as he has not had a pretty year.

Miami Marlins's Latest Performance :

Runs Provided By Veterans

As young as the Marlins are they still have some guys who have been around the MLB for a little bit as they have Starlin Castro, Cameron Maybin, J.T. Realmuto, and Justin Bour. Behind good pitching and the veterans providing the run support, the Marlins were able to snag game 2 in a 3 game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 3-2. The Dodgers may not be as good in 2018 as they once were, but when the young Marlins get to beat a high caliber franchise like the Los Angeles Dodgers it gives the guys confidence moving forward. J.T Realmuto, Starlin Castro, and Cameron Maybin each gave the Marlins an RBI apiece, but Maybin was the one to essentially win the game as he hit a go-ahead double in the top of the 9th inning which gave the Marlins that third run. J.T. Realmuto has been great for the Marlins in the games he has played in as he has the best batting average on the team with a .400. The Marlins received good pitching from Dillon Peters who had entered this game not too hot as he had an ERA of 6.98, but Peters gave the Marlins 5.1 innings giving up only 1 earned run on 4 hits. The Marlins also received another great performance from the 2nd-year reliever Drew Steckenrider who gave the Marlins a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 8th to put his season ERA at a 1.54 over the 11.2 innings he has appeared in.

How Colorado Rockies & Miami Marlins Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Colorado is 13-12, 9-5 on the road.

Miami is 6-17, 3-9 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: German Marquez (1-2, 6.14 ERA) for the Colorado Rockies vs. Caleb Smith (0-3, 5.82 ERA) for the Miami Marlins.

Marquez last started on 4/22 against the Cubs where he went 3.1 innings giving up 6 earned runs on 8 hits in a L.

Smith last started on 4/22 against the Brewers where he went 6 innings striking out 10 guys in a L.

Colorado ranks just outside the top 10 in runs scored while Miami ranks in the bottom 3.

Colorado and Miami both rank in the bottom 10 in team ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Colorado Rockies

My reason for the pick :

Marquez and Smith both haven’t been good on the mound for their teams which leads me to look at the team with the better bats which clearly lies in the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies ever since Nolan Arenado’s return have been putting up runs at ease as he is one of the top contributors on this strong Rockies lineup. Miami doesn’t have the bats to stay close to Colorado in what could be a high scoring affair. Colorado wins on the road.
