Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Detroit Tigers vs Baltimore Orioles

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting Detroit Tigers and the Baltimore Orioles will take place at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland, Friday at 7:05 pm EST.  Currently, the Detroit Tigers man the 3rd spot in the AL Central while the Baltimore Orioles occupy the last place slot in the AL East division.  This will be the second meeting of the year between these two squads as the Tigers swept the Orioles 3-0 at home on 4/19.

Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :

The Orioles comes into this matchup losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 2-3.  In all, they are losers of their last 8 contest and seeking to get a win in this matchup.  In fact, the only series that the Orioles have won all year long was their 3-game set to there they beat the Yankees 2 games to 1.  On the other hand, they have been swept by Detroit, Boston, and Houston already this season.  They have really had their troubles on offense during their current losing streak as their opponents have outscored them 53-23.  Again, they look to reverse the trends at home against a Detroit team that has had their struggles on the year, also.

For the season, Baltimore is averaging 3.27 runs per game (28th) with a team batting average of .215 (30th), 23 home runs (10th), and 7 stolen bases (24th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.95 (26th) with 183 k’s (13th) along with 9 quality starts (10th).

Manny Machado (.356 BA on 87 AB) and Trey Mancini (.284 BA on 81 AB) are the offensive leaders for the Baltimore Orioles.  Also, Adam Jones is also a pivotal component within the offense as well with a batting average of .239 on 92 at bats this season.

Dylan Bundy (1-2) has pitched 31.2 innings this season while allowing 8 runs on 26 hits, 1 homer, 9 walks, and 40 strikeouts on the year with an ERA of 1.42.  Andrew Cashner has also pitched 30 or more innings for the Orioles and has allowed 13 runs on 27 hits, 6 home runs, 13 walks, and 28 strikeouts along with an ERA of 3.60 thus far.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

The Detroit Tigers endured a rough start to their season losing 9 of their first 13 contests, yet, they have since turned the tide in this young season.  In other words, they rebounded from a rough start to win 3 of their last 5 games.  Aside from sweeping the Baltimore Orioles in a 3-game set, they tied the 4-game set against the lowly Kansas City Royals 2-2 this past weekend.  It would be important to note that the past 3 wins for the Tigers have been at home.  Now, they must illustrate that they can take this momentum on the road, where they are below average thus far in the season.

Currently, the Tigers are averaging 4.68 runs per game (13th) with a team batting average of .249 (10th), 15 homers (26th), along with 10 stolen bases (12th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.80 (13th) with 143 k’s (27th), along with 8 quality starts on the year (14th).

Miguel Cabrera (.299 BA on 67 AB), Nicholas Castellanos (.286 BA on 77 AB), and Leonys Martin (.286 BA on 70 AB) spearhead the Tiger offensive attack.  Jeimer Candelario (.275 BA on 80 AB) along with Victor Martinez (.274 BA on 62 AB) have also been solid as well this season.

Matthew Boyd (0-1) has pitched 19.1 innings this year while allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, 2 homers, 4 walks, and 11 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.40 while Michael Fulmer (1-2) has pitched 23.1 innings while allowing 12 runs on 26 hits, 3 homers, 6 walks, and 13 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.47.

How Detroit Tigers & Baltimore Orioles Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Tigers are 10-10 ATS while the O/U is 9-11.  On the other hand, the Orioles are 8-15 ATS while the O/U is 10-13.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

There is no question as to who the best team in this matchup is.  The Tigers, despite some setbacks of their own, have remained consistent lately.  On the other hand, the Orioles have continued to slide in their respective division, however, still seeking a win that could somehow stop the bleeding.  This certainly will not be an easy task as the Tigers come into this matchup slightly above .500 on the road this season.  The Orioles, on the other hand, are below average at home as they are 4-6 ATS thus far in the season.  In all, a win in this matchup for either team would be a positive as the season progresses.

Against The Spread Selection: Detroit Tigers

My reason for the pick :

While almost a month into the season, the Baltimore Orioles have fell quickly as they are losers of 9 of their last 10 games.  To get back into the win column, they must pick up a win against a team that they have not played well against in the past.  This is a tall order for a team that, despite having the offensive weapons in which to get hitters on base and runs across the plate, possesses a pitching staff that is simply average (at best) and have grossly under-performed all season.  With that being said, I expect the Tigers to take advantage of this Oriole pitching staff (much as the rest of the league has) and come away with the game 1 victory.
