Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Angels

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels will take place at Angel Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Friday at 10:07 pm EST.  Currently, the Yankees occupy the 3rd place slot in the AL East while the Angels are the 2nd place team within the AL West division.  This will be the first meeting of the year between these two squads, however, the Angels are 5-2 in their last 7 meetings with both teams splitting the last 6 games at Angel Stadium.

New York Yankees's Latest Performance :

While not having an outstanding season, the New York Yankees have remained consistent throughout the year.  They have only lost two series all year long (Orioles and the Red Sox), both to division opponents.  The Yankees have, however, won 6 of their last 9 games to where the O/U was 6-2-1.  As the stat would suggest, the Yankees are indeed an offensive team that can certainly put points on the board.  This, despite their current standing in the division, makes them a dangerous team in any given day/night.  They look to continue their success against an Angels team that is very familiar with New York as well had their fair share of success against in the past.

For the season, the Yankees average 5.65 runs per game (3rd) with a team batting average of .255 (7th), 28 home runs (5th), along with 9 stolen bases (20th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.30 (20th) wit 214 k’s (3rd), along with 8 quality starts on the season (16th).

Aaron Judge (.338 BA on 71 AB), Didi Gregorius (.333 BA on 63 AB), and Brett Gardner (.247 BA on 73 AB) have been outstanding for the Yankees this year at the plate.  On the other hand, Luis Severino (3-1) has pitched 24 innings while allowing 7 runs on 15 hits, 8 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.62 while Jordan Montgomery (2-0) has pitched 21.1 innings while allowing 9 runs on 21 hits, 2 homers, 8 walks, and 17 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.80.  Masahiro Tanaka(2-2) is also an important piece to the Yankee pitching staff as he has pitched 22.1 innings while allowing 17 runs on 24 hits, 5 homers, 4 walks, and 23 k’s with an ERA of 6.45.

Los Angeles Angels's Latest Performance :

The Angels had been on fire all season long, however, after being swept by the Boston Red Sox in a 3-game set along with losing the following series to the San Francisco Giants, the Angels enter this game losers of 4 of their last 6 games to where they were outscored 39-6.  Nevertheless, LA has a great team and eventually came out of their funk with a game 1 2-0 road win over the Astros on Monday night while winning game 2 by a score of 8-7 on Tuesday.  Their hope is that the momentum that they are obtaining through this series will carry over into the Yankees series.

For the season, the Angels are averaging 5.14 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .261 (4th), 32 homers (1st), along with 10 stolen bases (17th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.16 (18th) with 207 strikeouts (9th) with 5 quality starts on the year (7th).

Mike Trout (.309 BA on 81 AB), Andrelton Simmons (.295 BA on 78 AB), Albert Pujols (.267 BA on 90 AB), Luis Valbuena (.258 BA on 66 AB), and Justin Upton (.244 BA on 82 AB) have all been solid at the plate on the year.  Zack Cozart has been outstanding as well with a .238 batting average on 80 at bats.

Garrett Richards (3-0) has been the most consistent pitcher on the Angels’ staff this season.  Richards has pitched 26 innings while allowing 10 runs on 18 hits, 4 home runs, 16 walks, and 35 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.46 for the year.

How New York Yankees & Los Angeles Angels Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the New York Yankees are 10-10 ATS while the O/U is 1`3-6-1.  On the other hand, the Los Angeles Angels are 12-10 ATS while the O/U is 13-9.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be interesting in that the Yankees wish to build off their recent momentum to take out a hot offensive team like the Angels.  On the other hand, the Angels look to continue to pick up wins in hopes of staying in the hunt for the overtaking of the AL West division leaders in the Houston Astros.  Again, both these teams can put some points on the board which will, in essence, make the game even more interesting to watch.

Totals Selection: Over

My reason for the prediction :

This is a tough game to call as it would relate to the actual winner/loser; However, I feel as if the Over will certainly be the play in his matchup.  It is important to note that these teams do not have outstanding pitching staffs, yet, are solid rotations that are well capable of preserving wins after the offense has done its damage.  With that being said, with the hitters for both these squads being so experienced against the opposing pitcher(s) along with shaky pitching staffs, altogether, for both teams, I expect the over to be the play for not only Friday’s matchup, but, for the entirety of the series.
