Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Texas Rangers vs Toronto Blue Jays
Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays will take place at Rodgers Centre in Ontario, Canada, on Friday at 7:07 pm EST. While the Rangers occupy last place in the AL West division, the Toronto Blue Jays occupy the 2nd spot in the AL East division behind only the Boston Red Sox. This will be the 2nd meeting of the year between these two squads, however, Texas can be credited with taking the 2-1 series win on 4/9. Nonetheless, Toronto has won 9 of their last 14 matchups while being 3-1 in their last 4 games at Rodgers Centre.
Texas Rangers's Latest Performance :
The Texas Rangers have been up and down all season. They are fresh off a 2-1 series loss against the Seattle Mariners to where they were able to pick up a game 3 win, however, lost in game 1 in a 3-game series against the Oakland A’s by a score of 9-4 on 4/23. In all, the Rangers come into this matchup currently losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. After 2-straight series losses to Tampa Bay and to Seattle, the Rangers hope to calm the storm against the hot and cold Toronto Blue Jays.
For the season, Texas has been terrible both on offense and defense as they are only averaging 3.33 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .228 (23rd), with 22 homers (11th), and 4 stolen bases (30th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.55 (21st) with 172 strikeouts (13th) with 5 quality starts on the year (28th).
Nomar Mazara (.301 BA on 73 AB) and Adrian Beltre (.288 BA on 73 AB) have been the most consistent players within the Texas Ranger lineup thus far in the season. Furthermore, Shin-Soo Choo (.238 BA on 80 AB) and Joey Gallo (.202 BA on 84 AB) have also been solid for the Rangers at the plate.
The pitching staff has been shaky as well with Mike Minor (1-1) being the most consistent as he has pitched 21 innings and allowing 9 runs on 16 hits, 2 homers, 6 walks, and 20 strikeouts for an ERA of 3.86 for the year. Cole Hamels (1-3) has had an inconsistent campaign thus far pitching 28 innings and allowing 17 runs on 30 hits, 11 walks, 7 home runs, and 34 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.76.
Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :
The Toronto Blue Jays, after losing 2-straight games to begin the year, have since won 13 of 19 to gain a healthy bit of confidence as the season matures. Nonetheless, the Blue Jays have lost 2-straight leading into this matchup. Toronto had won 3 series’ in a row until running into a buzz saw in the name of the New York Yankees. The Yanks went on to whip on the Blue Jays in that series winning 3 games to 1. In all, the Blue Jays hope to get back to basics in this matchup: solid pitching, stingy defense, and, most importantly, putting hits and points on the board. In their 2-game skid, the Blue Jays have been outscored 14-2 by their opponent.
For the season, the Blue Jays are averaging 5.52 runs per game (5th) with a team batting average of .234 (19th), 28 homers (7th), along with 9 stolen bases (22nd). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.04 (15th) with 179 (18th), along with 7 quality starts on the year (21st).
Kevin Pillar (.304 BA on 79 AB), Yangervis Solarte (.250 BA on 68 AB), and Justin Smoak (.237 BA on 76 AB) have spearheaded the Toronto offensive attack this season. Aaron Sanchez (1-2) has pitched 25.2 innings while allowing 11 runs on 24 hits, 1 homer, 13 walks, and 15 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.86.
How Texas Rangers & Toronto Blue Jays Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, Texas Rangers are 9-14 ATS while the O/U is 11-11-1. On the other hand, the Blue Jays are 12-9 ATS while the O/U is 10-10-1.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup will be interesting and competitive in that the up and down Texas Rangers will attempt to take a series away from an inconsistent, yet, decent Toronto squad. While it can be said that the Rangers would like to obtain some wins in which to somehow climb out of the cellar of their respective division, the Toronto Blue Jays need a win in which to maintain their position within their division as well. In addition, the Jays would also like to climb out of a 2-game skid in which to right the ship.
Against The Spread Selection: Toronto Blue Jays
My reason for the pick :
Toronto has been strong at home this season. In fact, they are 7-3 at Rodgers Centre with the O/U being 4-5-1. As stated, the Rangers are .500 on the road thus far and I fully expect them to compete against this Toronto squad; However, Toronto wants out of their 2-game funk and will play much better at home against the Rangers. With that being said, I will have to side with the Blue Jays in this contest because I feel as if they are (slightly) the better overall team at this point, but, because with the Rangers’ inconsistent play on both sides will ultimately be their undoing against a Toronto team that is known to play at a high level when north of the border.
