Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies look like a playoff team in the early going of the 2018 season and they will look to continue their hot streak as they will go up against NL East rivals in the Atlanta Braves in game 2 of a 3 game series. These teams have met 6 times prior to this series where Atlanta won 4 out of the 6 matchups.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

Sluggish Day Turns Into A Win

The Atlanta Braves young talent has finally caught up to all of the years of trades and development as most of the guys are seeing time in the big leagues and we saw another guy get his promotion with this time it being the #1 prospect in Ronald Acuna as he made his debut on 4/25 against the Reds. The Braves were able to come out with a win after a top of the 9th double from 2nd year 3B in John Camargo who tallied his second double of the game as well as his second RBI. Rookie Ronald Acuna didn’t have the game he wanted in his career debut as he went 1 for 5 from the plate, but him getting a hit in his first game may allow him to gain the confidence he needed moving forward. Matt Wisler looked great in his first start of the season which came on 4/19 against the New York Mets where he went 7 innings only giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits, but his 2nd start which came in this 4/25 matchup wasn’t as pretty. Wisler only lasted 5 innings but gave up 4 earned runs on 9 hits which accounted for 75% of the Reds hits. Although Wisler struggled, the bullpen was able to hold their own as the combination of Jesse Biddle, Daniel Winkler, and A.J. Minter went the rest of the way only giving up a combined 2 hits. The Braves don’t have a set closer, but A.J. Minter was able to pick up the first save of his young career.

Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :

Another Great Debut From Arietta

The Philadelphia Phillies may not have the best record in the MLB, but they have been one of the more surprising teams as the Phillies aren’t only coming off a 66 win season but they have a new coach in Gabe Kepler at the helm. The Phillies have made the necessary moves to add veterans to the roster and they have also done a good job in developing their young guys during the 2017 losing season. One of the moves that the Phillies made has been paying off in a big way as starter Jake Arietta has been the best starter out of a good starting rotation. Jake Arietta got the ball for the Phillies 4/25 matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks and pitched excellent against one of the best teams in the MLB as he went 7 innings giving up only 1 runs on 4 hits. Arietta has started 4 games entering this series going 3-0 in those matchups as well as posting a sub 2.00 ERA with a 1.82. Hector Neris is in his 2nd full year as the closer for the Phillies and although he has 5 saves on the season Neris needs to work on his command as he gave up 2 walks in the 9th inning which put the tying runs on base. 27-year-old Aaron Altherr hasn’t been great from the plate this year as he is batting .172, but Altherr was able to give the Phillies the necessary boost needed to win the game as his only hit was a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies

My reason for the pick :

The Philadelphia Phillies have not had their number against the Braves this season as they have gotten roughed up in their first few matchups. The good news for Philadelphia is that they get to return home where they have been so good this year. The Phillies also have their young stud in Nick Pivetta on the mound who has been good in his first few starts. Philadelphia is as hot as any team in the MLB and that continues in this matchup with a win at home.
