Chicago White Sox vs Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals will host a doubleheader on 4/28 on which is a makeup game from an earlier rainout and we have game 1 of the day as they will host AL Central rival in the Chicago White Sox. This is a matchup of the bottom feeders in the American League and essentially a battle for last place in the division.

Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :

Sluggers Struggling With Strikeouts

The Chicago White Sox may be young and might not have the best record this season but they have a solid young core as they have guys that are playing good in the MLB. Two of the best HR hitters on the White Sox in Matt Davidson and Yoan Moncada have struggled all season with strikeouts as they both have over 30 on the year. Davidson started the season as one of the hottest hitters in the MLB as he hit 3 HRs and 5 RBIs in the first game alone, but since this big game Davidson has only gathered 2 HRs over the next 18 games and is batting .167 in the month of April. Yoan Moncada may only be 22-years-old but he has played in 3 seasons already so his strikeout tendencies can’t be excused as he sits 2nd in the MLB with 39. The White Sox may be the worst team in the MLB in team ERA, but they have found some bright spots especially with youngster Reynaldo Lopez. Lopez has received no offensive support from his team which has contributed to his 0-2 record, but statistically, he isn’t terrible as he has sent 23 guys back to the dugout and holds an ERA of 1.50 through his first 4 starts. Nate Jones may be 32-years-old but he has been good so far this season as has pitched in 8.2 innings giving up only 1 earned run on 5 hits which has his ERA at a 1.04.

Kansas City Royals's Latest Performance :

Mike Moustakas Show

The Kansas City Royals have been absolutely awful this season as outside of Mike Moustakas they have no one that will make an all-star game or be an offensive juggernaut. Mike Moustakas was an outlier this offseason as no one including the Kansas City Royals wanted Moustakas as they thought his asking price was too much money, but given the Royals not landing anyone in free agency they figured they take back Moustakas. Smart move on the Royals part, because if Moustakas was to go elsewhere this offseason the Royals may only have 2 or 3 wins this season due to the lack of production throughout their lineup. Moustakas leads the Royals in every major statistical category as he has 7  HRs, 18 RBIs, and a batting average of .304 . Outside of Moustakas, the Royals have Lucas Duda and Whit Merrifield as they each have 3 HRs, but have not done very much outside of that as the duo has combined for 35 strikeouts as well as a batting average of .243. The Royals have also expected more production out of reliever Justin Grimm who came over to Kansas City in free agency from the Chicago Cubs. Grimm has appeared in 7 innings this year and has a team-high ERA with a 21.86 which is not ideal for a guy who pitched in the World Series 2 years ago.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Carson Fulmer (1-1, 6.00 ERA) for the Chicago White Sox vs. Eric Skoglund (0-2, 8.59 ERA) for the Kansas City Royals.

Fulmer last started on 4/23 against the Mariners where he went 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits in a W.

Skoglund last started on 4/22 against the Tigers where he went 5 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 4 hits in a ND.

Chicago and Kansas City both rank in the bottom 10 in runs scored.

Chicago and Kansas City both rank in the bottom 10 in team ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Chicago White Sox

My reason for the pick :

This matchup is hard to pick as both teams are awful, but the difference in this matchup is how bad Skoglund has been this season while Fulmer looked solid last outing as he was able to hold a solid Mariners team to only 2 runs. Kansas City has also had no interest in playing at home as they have the worst record at home out of any MLB team. Chicago White Sox win game 1 of the doubleheader.
