Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Milwaukee Brewers vs Chicago Cubs

Game 3 of a 4-game set between the visiting Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs will take place on Saturday at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, beginning at 2:20 pm EST.  The Milwaukee Brewers currently occupy the top spot in the NL Central division while the Cubs are in the 3rd spot behind the St. Louis Cardinals.  While they are leading the division, the Brewers fell to the Cubs earlier in the season losing a 4-game home series 3 games to 1.

Milwaukee Brewers's Latest Performance :

The Brewers, on the other hand, though up and down early in the season, has since been on a tear winning their last 7 games.  Their most recent win (5-2) allowed the Brewers to take a 1-0 lead in a short, 2-game set on the road at Kansas City.  Their current streak comes after the Brewers were reeling after losing 6 of 9 and looking for answers to their offensive woes.  They are not exhibiting this problem at this point as they have, during their current winning streak, outscored their opponents 39-12 and have won their last 3 series, with 2 being sweeps (Miami/KC Royals).

For the season, the Brewers are averaging 4.09 runs per game (20th) with a team batting average of .245 (13th), 28 homers (4th), and 14 stolen bases on the year (7th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.38 (9th) with 204 strikeouts (10th), along with 6 quality starts (25th).

Lorenzo Cain (.303 BA on 76 AB) and Travis Shaw (.289 BA on 83 AB) have been the offensive stars for Milwaukee thus far.  Furthermore, Ryan Braun (.221 BA on 68 AB) has also been pivotal to the offensive attack as well.

Pitcher Chase Anderson (2-1) has pitched 27.2 innings while allowing 10 runs on 20 hits, 6 homers, 9 walks, and 21 strikeouts for an ERA of 3.25 while Jhoulys Chacin (1-1) has pitched 23 innings while allowing 14 runs on 28 hits, 3 homers, 13 walks, and 16 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.18.

Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :

The Cubs come into this game winners of 4 of their last 5 games to there the O/U was 4-1.  They are coming off a road series against the Colorado Rockies to where they won the series 2-1 along with a 2-game set against the Cleveland Indians which they won game 1 by a score of 10-3.  In all, the Cubs have been, for the most part, very consistent this season as expected, however, this matchup against the Brewers will serve as a measuring stick as to how good the Brewers are, in general, and/or do they have what it takes to take out the Cubs in the NL Central.

For the season, the Cubs are averaging 6 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .264 (3rd), 24 homers (19th) along with 4 stolen bases (30th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.04 (15th) with 181 strikeouts (21st) with 8 quality starts on the season, good for 16th in the MLB.

Kris Bryant (.319 BA on 69 AB), Kyle Schwarber (.302 BA on 63 AB), Javier Baez (.299 BA on 77 AB), and Jason Heyward (.277 BA on 65 AB) have spearheaded the Cubs offensive attack this year.  Wilson Contreras has also been critical to the scoring attack with a batting average of .274 on 73 at bats.

Jon Lester (2-0) has been solid this year pitching 20.1 innings while allowing 9 runs on 19 hits, 1 homer, 8 walks, and 18 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.10 while Tyler Chatwood (1-3) has pitched 21.2 innings while allowing 9 runs on 19 hits, 1 homer, 19 walks, and 23 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.74.  Kyle Hendricks (1-1) has also pitched 22 innings while allowing 10 runs on 23 hits, 5 homers, 7 walks, and 19 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.09 for the season.

How Milwaukee Brewers & Chicago Cubs Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Cubs are 11-9 ATS while the O/U is 10-9-1.  Onn the other hand, the Brewers are 14-10 ATS while the O/U is 10-14.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

These team matchup well at this point in the season because they are both hot as fire.  On one hand, the Brewers are showing consistency and focus in their matchups while the Cubs are equality zeroed in on their opponents.  In all, I expect this series to go a long way in deciding who the early frontrunner will be the for NL Central.  Again, both these teams are on fire, and since this set is so important to both, I expect each to play their best which essentially means strong pitching, strong defense, timely hits.  It is for this reason that I will side with the underside of the total in this matchup.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

In their last 4-game set amongst each other, the under was 3-1-1 as the Cubs rolled.  During that series, the Cubs relied on their pitching rotation to neutralize the batters for the Brewers.  I feel as though they will utilize the same approach here.  Nonetheless, I will not pick a winner in this instance, but, will certainly choose the under as the play in this contest simply because the focus will certainly be there for both teams, thus resulting in a low scoring grind-out game that both teams are very much able and willing to play.
