Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels look to close out a 3 game series against American League foe in the New York Yankees. Both teams look like they are well on their way to competing for a Wild Card spot as both the AL East and AL West are deep divisions this season. This is the first series of the season between these two teams and they will meet again on 5/25 in New York for 3 games.

New York Yankees's Latest Performance :

Streaky Yankees

The New York Yankees looked clueless under first-year manager Aaron Boone after the first 15 games or so, but the Yankees have used their current homestand to their advantage as they ended the Minnesota series on a 6 game win streak. The Yankees have enjoyed the production out of SS Didi Gregorius as he leads the MLB in RBIs with 29 and sits 2nd in HRs with 9. Didi enjoyed his recent home series as over the last 7 games he has gone .407 from the plate with 4 HRs and 12 RBIs which is a better stat line than 90% of the other shortstops season stats. The Yankees slugger Aaron Judge has also had a really good year as he isn’t only hitting only HRs but has been getting on base at an effective rate as his batting average is at a .337. Judge is coming off a great rookie year as he hit 52 HRs and 114 RBIs which was one of the best rookie seasons out of any MLB player in history. The Yankees have enjoyed good starting pitching this season, but one of their top-end guys in Sonny Gray has struggled this season as he has as 7.71 ERA through his first 5 starts. Sonny Gray was one of the most sought-after pitchers last trade deadline, but his hype might be too much as his last good season came in 2015 where he went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA.

Los Angeles Angels's Latest Performance :

MVP Season

The Los Angeles Angels have not made the playoffs in 3 consecutive years, but the Angels look well on their way this year to breaking the streak and competing for a playoff spot. The Angels have been led by their 2x MVP Mike Trout as he has gotten off to a great start in 2018 as he was the first player this season to hit 10 HRs. Trout leads the MLB in HRs with 10 and has contributed another 18 RBIs as well as a slugging percentage of .663 which is a career high. The way Mike Trout has played in 2018 has him as a prime candidate for another MVP season and a career season. Andrelton Simmons is coming off a career game on 4/24 as he went 3 for 4 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in an Angels 8-7 win over the first place Houston Astros. The Angels have started 9 different starters this season as injury has deterred the regular starting rotation, but the best starter in 2018 has been Garrett Richards. Richard is entering his 8th season as an Angels starter and he is off to his one of his best starts yet as he has started off the year 3-0 with a 3.46 ERA as well as 35 strikeouts. The Angels have a great closer in Keynan Middleton who is in his 2nd year in the MLB but he hasn’t looked like it as he has capitalized on every save opportunity he has had this season with 6 saves.

Against The Spread Selection: New York Yankees

My reason for the pick :

Both teams have 2 of their best pitchers on the mound in Sabathia and Skaggs, but given the Yankees recent win streak I trust them more in this matchup. The Yankees have started to catchup up to their potential as they were slated to be one of the best teams in the MLB before the season started. Los Angeles hasn’t been amazing at home either where they bring a losing record into this game. Yankees win.
