Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Oakland Athletics vs Houston Astros

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Oakland Athletics and the Houston Astros will take place on Saturday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, at 8:10 pm EST.  Currently the Oakland Athletics occupy 4th place in the AL West division while the Houston Astros are in the top spot within the AL West.  This will be the first meeting of the year between these two squads, however, the A’s picked up the road win over the Astros on 9/10/2017 by a score of 10-2.  The Athletics cashed in on the spread (-189) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 9.5 runs for the game.

Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :

The Oakland Athletics has had to deal with a string of losses to start the season, however, they have been able to become more consistent recently.  In fact, the A’s are currently winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was at 4-1.  The Athletics were solid against a terrible White Sox squad last week as they swept the series at home.  Furthermore, they took this momentum into their 3-game series against the Boston Red Sox but lost 7-3 in game 1.  Nonetheless, the Athletics would prevail in game 2 by a score of 3-0 on Saturday night followed by winning the series over the Red Sox in Sunday’s finale by a score of 4-1.  Following this series, the A’s continued their momentum by winning both game 1 and game 2 on the road against a reeling Texas Rangers team.  If Oakland can maintain their focus and consistency for the remainder of the series, they will have a chance at posting their second sweep of the season.

Oakland has been on fire offensively lately, averaging 5.35 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .270 (2nd), 26 homers (6th), and 4 stolen bases on the year (29th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.75 (24th) with 142 strikeouts (18th) with 5 quality starts on the season (27th).

Jed Lowrie (.372 Ba on 86 AB), Matt Chapman (.293 BA on 75 AB), Matt Olson (.286 BA on 77 AB), and Stephen Piscotty (.282 BA on 71 AB) have spearheaded the Athletics’ offensive attack this year.  Jonathan Lucroy (.268 BA on 56 AB), Khris Davis (.259 BA on 81 AB), Marcus Semien (.241 BA on 87 AB), along with Matt Joyce (.241 BA on 54 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.

Sean Manaea (2-2) has been the most consistent on the Athletics’ pitching staff this year pitching 27.2 innings while allowing only 5 runs on 16 hits, 4 walks, 4 homers, and 20 strikeouts for an ERA of 1.63.  Daniel Mengden (2-2) has also been relatively solid in pitching 24 innings and allowing 15 runs on 25 hits, 2 homers, 3 walks, and 18 strikeouts on the year.

Houston Astros's Latest Performance :

After a fairly dominant season thus far, the Houston Astros had just swept both the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox before hitting a wall, so to speak, in matching up with an outstanding, offensive minded squad such as the Angels.  After 2 games, the Astros have hit a rough patch in losing two straight where in game 1 the Angels squeaked out a 2-0 win while in game 2 won by a score of 8-7.  It seems as if the Astros are simply not getting the timely hits that they need to put themselves in opportunities to score.  In addition, their pitching staff has been shaky against LA as well.

For the season, Houston is averaging 4.91 runs per game (9th) with a team batting average of .254 (6th), 22 homers (11th), along with 10 stolen bases on the year (13th).  Their pitching staff ranks highest in MLB stats with an ERA of 2.28 (1st) with 240 strikeouts (1st) along with 16 quality starts (1st).

Jose Altuve (.349 BA on 86 AB), Carlos Correa (.333 BA on 75 AB), Josh Reddick (267 BA on 60 AB), and Alex Bregman (.241 BA on 83 AB) has spearheaded the Astros offense throughout the year.  George Springer (.239 BA on 88 AB) and Even Gattis (.219 BA on 64 AB) have also been solid contributors for the Astros at the plate.

Charlie Morton (3-0) has been consistent this year for Houston pitching 25 innings while allowing only 3 runs on 16 hits, 2 homers, 6 walks, and 33 strikeouts with an ERA of .72 while Justin Verlander (3-0) has pitched 32.2 innings thus far while allowing 5 runs on 17 hits, 3 homers, 8 walks, and 39 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.10.

How Oakland Athletics & Houston Astros Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Oakland Athletics are 10-13 ATS while the O/U is 13-9-1.  On the other hand, the Astros are 13-12 ATS while the O/U is 10-14-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This game will entail two teams trending in opposite directions.  On one hand, the Athletics are on a winning streak and will love to continue their momentum on the road against the defending champs while the Houston Astros, who have suddenly been caught off guard by a surging Angels squad at home, will be looking to rebound in this matchup and develop the type of play that is reminiscent of the talent in which they possess.  In all, this will be a highly competitive matchup that will be won by pitching, an area where Houston is certainly most talented.

Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros

My reason for the pick :

This matchup will be yet another AL division showdown with Houston looking to gain some of its mojo back after getting spanked by the Angels early in the week.  On the other hand, Oakland is coming in very confident and looking to catch the Astros sleeping in order to sneak out a series victory this weekend.  Unfortunately, while the Athletics have played well recently, they will ultimately be no match for a Houston squad looking to shake off the remnants of the LA series and get back to basics.  Pick the Houston Astros in game 1 to get the job done.
