Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Seattle Mariners vs Cleveland Indians

Game 3 of the 4-game set between the visiting Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians will take place on Saturday at 6:10 pm EST at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.  Currently, the Indians occupy the top of in the AL Central division rankings while the Seattle Mariners occupy the 3rd spot in the AL West division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams with Seattle winning a 3-game set on opening weekend 2 games to 1.  On the other hand, the Indians have taken 2 out of 3 in the last set at Progressive Field.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

The Mariners had a decent start to the 2018 campaign.  In fact, they were winners of 8 of their first 12 games, however, they recently fell on hard time losing 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-4 during this stretch.  Though the Mariners managed to win a 3-game road series versus the Texas Rangers on 4/22, they went on to win game 1 of the following road series versus the Chicago White Sox along with being able to pick up the 1-0 win in game 2 on 4/24.  In all, Seattle could use a couple wins in this series in which to continue their recent stretch of play that has been reminiscent of how they started the season.

For the season, the Mariners are averaging 4.11 runs per game (18th) with a team batting average of .249 (8th), 19 homers (22nd) along with 14 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has certainly been inconsistent on the year with an ERA of 4.53 (20th) with 157 strikeouts (20th) along with 6 quality starts (25th).

Robinson Cano (.311 BA on 61 AB), Dee Gordon (.307 BA on 75 AB), Jean Segura(.303 BA on 76 AB), and Mitch Haniger (.290 BA on 62 AB) have been solid at the plate for the Mariners thus far.  Kyle Seager (.246 BA on 69 AB) has also been pivotal to Seattle’s success this season.

Pitching for the Mariners have certainly not been their strong point, there are individuals within their staff that have performed well in 2018.  Mike Leake (2-1) has pitched 24 innings while allowing 12 runs on 22 hits, 3 homers, 10 walks, and 15 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.50 while James Paxton (1-1) has pitched 21.2 innings while allowing 11 runs on 19 hits, 4 homers, 9 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.57 for the season.  Finally, former All-Star Felix Hernandez (2-2) has pitched 26.2 innings this year while allowing 15 runs on 23 hits, 5 homers, 10 walks, and 20 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.06.

Cleveland Indians's Latest Performance :

The Cleveland Indians come into this game as winners of 4 of their last 7 games to where the O/U was 2-5.  They are fresh off a series win against the lowly Baltimore Orioles (3-1) but 10-3 game 1 home losers in a short, 2-game set against the Chicago Cubs that began on 4/24.  Nonetheless, the Indians have continued their consistency for the most part, particularly in the pitching department.  Its staff still possesses on of the most solid in the MLB and this will certainly be displayed during this series.

For the season, Cleveland averages 3.48 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .218 (29th), 25 homers (12th) along with 15 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 2.92 (4th) with 177 strikeouts (23rd), along with 14 quality starts (2nd).

Jose Ramirez (.266 BA on 79 AB) and Francisco Lindor (.218 BA on 87 AB) are the offensive leaders for the Indians while Yonder Alonso (.213 BA on 75 AB) have also been critical to the Indians’ offensive success.

Mike Clevinger (2-0) has pitched 25.2 innings while allowing 5 runs on 19 hits, 1 homer, 8 walks, and 17 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.75 while Corey Kluber (3-1) has also been solid pitching 36.2 innings while allowing 8 runs on 22 hits, 4 homers, 6 walks, and 37 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.96.  Carlos Carrasco (4-0) has pitched 35 innings while allowing 9 runs on 24 hits, 3 homers, 6 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.31 while Trevor Bauer (1-2) has pitched 27 innings while allowing 8 runs on 20 hits, home runs, 6 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.67.

How Seattle Mariners & Cleveland Indians Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Seattle Mariners are 13-10 ATS while the O/U is 14-9.  On the other hand, the Cleveland Indians are 8-13 ATS while the O/U is 7-14.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both these teams matchup well in that they are relatively low-scoring teams that rely on their pitching in which to wear down and, ultimately, beat their opponent(s).  With that being said, the Indians will look to continue their success against this Mariner squad that has not exactly played well on the road thus far.  Nevertheless, this does not take away from the fact that Seattle has played great all-around baseball recently and will certainly rise to the challenge; Yet, this will be a defensive minded game that I feel will be right down the ally of Cleveland’s philosophy.

Against The Spread Selection: Cleveland Indians

My reason for the pick :

Again, while the Mariners have played well recently, I like this Cleveland team at home in this contest.  They are currently 6-3 this year at Progressive Field and I expect them to continue this momentum in front of the Indian faithful on Saturday.  As stated, the Mariners will indeed come to play, however, the Indians Pitching staff will exert their dominance, thus rendering the Mariner batters obsolete.
