St. Louis Cardinals vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates host the St. Louis Cardinals in game 2 of a 3 game series in a National League Central matchup. This is the first series of the season between these two and after this series, the Cardinals and Pirates won’t meet again until 5/25 for another 3 game series in Pittsburgh.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

Cardinals Looking Good

The St. Louis Cardinals are finally all healthy and are playing well as of recent as they find themselves towards the top of the division with an 8-2 record over the last 10 games. St. Louis showed their potential on 4/25 against the New York Mets as they received a good game from both their pitchers and their hitters as the Cardinals won, 9-1. Michael Wacha started his 5th game and had another gem as he was able to go 6 innings giving up only 1 earned run while striking out 8 guys in the process, and Wacha is only heating up as he has gone 4-1 with a 3.62 ERA. 2nd-year reliever John Brebbia had another great game as he was able to close out the final 3 innings giving up only 2 hits.  The Cardinals were able to receive offensive production from Dexter Fowler, Jedd Gyorko, and Marcell Ozuna as the trio had 2 RBIs apiece. Jedd Gyorko has recently come off the DL and he hasn’t disappointed as he picked up his 1st HR of the season to go along with his .467 batting average.  The Cardinals are hoping that a good game from Marcell Ozuna helps him get back on track as he has struggled compared to his past seasons. Ozuna had 37 HRs and 124 RBIs in 2017, but over the last 7 games, Ozuna has gone 2 for 27 from the plate and only has 2 HRs on the season.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

Up & Down Day

The Pittsburgh Pirates played a doubleheader on 4/25 against the Detroit Tigers and witnessed a big offensive day as they piled up a total of 18 runs on 29 hits over the course of the two games. The Pirates in the first game endured a rough game from starter Jameson Taillon who has been good for the Pirates all season but he was destroyed by the Detroit Tigers in this matchup as he was only able to last 3.2 innings as he gave up 7 earned runs on 10 hits which has risen his season ERA from a 2.86 to a 4.91. The Pirates did enjoy offense from an unlikely source as Francisco Cervelli had 1 HRs and 6 RBIs which has his season total at 3 HRs and 18 RBIs. Cervelli hasn’t been an offensive player in his lengthy career as his season best came in 2015 where he homered 7 times and drove in 43 RBIs so having the stat line he has already through 19 games is a relieving sight. Jose Osuna started the 2018 season in AAA, but with the long day that the Pirates faced they knew they needed to make some additions to help give the starters some rest. Osuna enjoyed a good season debut as he was able to go 2 for 4 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs which may allow Osuna to stay in the Major Leagues over the course of the season.

How St. Louis Cardinals & Pittsburgh Pirates Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

St. Louis is 14-9, 8-4 on the road.

Pittsburgh is 13-11, 6-5 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Jack Flaherty (0-0, 1.80 ERA) for the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Trevor Williams (3-1, 2.15 ERA) for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Flaherty last started on 4/3 against the Brewers where he went 5 innings striking out 9 guys in a ND.

Williams last started on 4/22 against the Phillies where he went 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 1 hit in a ND.

St. Louis ranks in the top 10 in runs scored while Pittsburgh ranks outside the top 10.

St. Louis ranks in the top 10 in team ERA while Pittsburgh ranks in the bottom 10.

Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals

My reason for the pick :

The Cardinals have been red hot as of recent and although Flaherty hasn’t started since 4/3 he will have his red-hot offense to back him up. The Pirates started the year off well but we knew that the Pirates team wasn’t legit and they have started to show us signs that we were right. St. Louis has also had a very good bullpen this season while Pittsburgh has not so this could come down to the later innings. St. Louis wins on the road.
