Tampa Bay Rays vs Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are excited to play another home game after playing 3 straight road series as they will host a familiar AL East opponent in the Tampa Bay Rays who have been streaky as of recent. These two teams have met 7 times before this series with Boston being winners in 6 of those matchups.

Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :

Tampa Heating Up

The Tampa Bay Rays looked dead in the water after the first few weeks as this team was a for sure candidate for last-place in the AL East, but with recent series against the Rangers and Orioles, the Rays have shown us that they aren’t as bad as people make them out to be. The Rays entered a 4/25 matchup against the last-place Orioles with a 4 game win streak and showed how much better they were than them as they won by a score of 8-4 to extend their win streak to 5 games. The Rays may have given up a ton of their offensive production this past offseason but they made the necessary moves to replace it as C.J. Cron has shown why he was brought in. Over the last 7 games, Cron has played awesome as he is batting .355 but has been hitting the ball with a purpose as he has hit 4 HRs and 10 RBIs. The Rays may have also found the future replacement for their former franchise player Evan Longoria as the 24-year-old 3B Daniel Robertson has been awesome this season. Robertson over the last 7 games has accounted for most of his offensive production as he isn’t only batting .417 but also has 2 HRs and 4 RBIs. Robertson entered these past 7 games batting .261 and only had 1 RBI but the confidence has started to build for Robertson and its showing mightily.

Boston Red Sox's Latest Performance :

Mookie Has Another Big Game

The Boston Red Sox have not let off the gas at all this season as they are entering the 5th weekend of baseball as the best team in the MLB as they have got it done in both facets of the games. The thing that makes the Red Sox so appealing is the depth of their starting lineup which has shown as they have 4 starters batting over .300, but the guy to steal the show from the other guys has been Mookie Betts. Betts is arguably the best leadoff hitter in the game and he leads the Red Sox in HRs and RBIs from the top spot in the batting order as he has 8 HRs and 17 RBIs on the season, and sits second in batting average with a .350. Betts propelled the Red Sox to a 4-3 win on 4/25 against the Toronto Blue Jays as he hit 2 HRs and 3 RBIs in the ball game. The Boston Red Sox will be that much deadlier when they receive Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Pedroia back from their injuries as Bogaerts was batting .368 in the first 9 games he played in and Pedroia is a former MVP who is coming off a solid 2017 campaign. The Red Sox have received good pitching from both their starters and relievers as the team currently sits #2 in team ERA. The Red Sox will not cool down anytime soon due to the depth this team has and when they get two of their better players back it’s scary to think where this team will go.

Against The Spread Selection: Boston Red Sox

My reason for the pick :

You may look at this game and think you should back the Rays because they are on a streak and Pomeranz numbers aren’t pretty, but that’s why this might appear as a trap game. Boston is the best team in the MLB at home and although Pomeranz had a bad first start he is a guy who went 17-6 with a 3.32 ERA last season so the trends are telling me that he will turn it around. Tampa has also played consecutive last-place teams and not to take anything away from their streak but those teams aren’t any good. Boston takes an easy victory.

Betting trends for Tampa Bay Rays:

  • Tampa Bay is 2-8 against AL East opponents this season.

  • The over is 7-2 on the road this season.

Betting trends for Boston Red Sox:

  • Boston is 16-3 against right-handed pitchers this season.

  • The over is 11-6 after a win this season.
