Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Texas Rangers vs Toronto Blue Jays

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays will continue at Rodgers Centre in Ontario, Canada, beginning on Saturday at 4:07 pm EST.  Currently, the Texas Rangers occupy the last slot in the AL West division while the Blue Jays are ranked 2nd in the AL East.  This series is the first series of the season amongst both these teams, however, the Blue Jays have won 6 of the last 10 meetings amongst these two teams along with taking 2 of the last 3 at Rodgers Centre.

Texas Rangers's Latest Performance :

The Texas Rangers have also been up and down all season.  They are fresh off a lost series against the Seattle Mariners.  They were able to pick up a game 3 win in the finale of this series, however, lost in game 1 of the following 3-game set against the Oakland A’s by a score of 9-4 on 4/23.  Furthermore, the Rangers fell in game 2 by a score of 3-2.  In all, the Rangers come into this matchup currently losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  After 2-straight series losses to Tampa Bay, Seattle, and, eventually, to the Oakland A’s, the Rangers hope to calm the storm against this Toronto Blue Jays team on the road.

For the season, Texas has been terrible both on offense and defense as they are only averaging 3.33 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .228 (23rd), with 22 homers (11th), and 4 stolen bases (30th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.55 (21st) with   172 strikeouts (13th) with 5 quality starts on the year (28th).

Nomar Mazara (.301 BA on 73 AB) and Adrian Beltre (.288 BA on 73 AB) have been the most consistent players within the Texas Ranger lineup thus far in the season.  Furthermore, Shin-Soo Choo (.238 BA on 80 AB) and Joey Gallo (.202 BA on 84 AB) have also been solid for the Rangers at the plate.

The pitching staff has been shaky as well with Mike Minor (1-1) being the most consistent as he has pitched 21 innings and allowing 9 runs on 16 hits, 2 homers, 6 walks, and 20 strikeouts for an ERA of 3.86 for the year.  Cole Hamels (1-3) has had an inconsistent campaign thus far pitching 28 innings and allowing 17 runs on 30 hits, 11 walks, 7 home runs, and 34 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.76.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

Despite working hard to pick up the necessary wins that make up for their lackluster performances earlier in the year, the Blue Jays have now lost 2-straight leading into this matchup.  Toronto had won 3 series’ in a row until running into a buzz saw in the name of the New York Yankees.  The Yanks went on to whip on the Blue Jays in that series 3 games to 1.  The Blue Jays, however, recovered from the Yankee series by winning game 1 of a 3-game set with the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on 4/24.  For Toronto, it starts with the offense.  The problem lately is that the offense has been nonexistent.  With the Rangers pitching staff being up and down all season, this will be an interesting matchup to watch in that the Blue Jays may indeed get their bats re-heated.

For the season, the Blue Jays are averaging 5.52 runs per game (5th) with a team batting average of .234 (19th), 28 homers (7th), along with 9 stolen bases (22nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.04 (15th) with 179 (18th), along with 7 quality starts on the year (21st).

Kevin Pillar (.304 BA on 79 AB), Yangervis Solarte (.250 BA on 68 AB), and Justin Smoak (.237 BA on 76 AB) have spearheaded the Toronto offensive attack this season.  Aaron Sanchez (1-2) has pitched 25.2 innings while allowing 11 runs on 24 hits, 1 homer, 13 walks, and 15 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.86.

How Texas Rangers & Toronto Blue Jays Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Texas Rangers are 9-16 ATS while the O/U is 12-12-1.  On the other hand, the Toronto Blue Jays are 13-9 ATS while the O/U is 10-11-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

What will make this game interesting is that both are looking to get some much-needed wins in which to halt their recent losses.  Texas will be looking for an all-around performance from their lineup as well as from their pitching staff while the Blue Jays will also look to crank up the offense a bit along with shore up the vulnerabilities found within their pitching staff.  What better way than to do this against an inconsistent team such as the Rangers.

Against The Spread Selection: Toronto Blue Jays

My reason for the pick :

I have no confidence at this point in the Rangers.  They are consistently up and down and not very reliable either at home or on the road.  Anyway, while Toronto has not been stellar recently, and have been up and down for the better part of this young season as well, I continue to believe that they will be able to handle the Rangers in this contest.  Besides, the Blue Jays play much better at Rodgers Centre and I expect this trend to continue Saturday.  In other words, yet another pitching disaster will once again be the Rangers’ undoing in this game 2 matchup.
