New York Mets vs San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres will look to wrap up a 3 good game home series against National League foe in the New York Mets. These two teams are in different spots within their division as New York leads the NL East and San Diego sits last in the NL West. After they wrap up this series they will not meet until 7/23 where San Diego will travel to New York.

New York Mets's Latest Performance :

Another Late-Game Collapse

The New York Mets started off the season as one of the best surprises in baseball and although they still sit in first place the race has tightened up as Philadelphia has put some wins together while New York enters this series dropping 6 out of their last 10. The story for the Mets this season has been how good their starting pitching has been as the starting 5 have been dominant, but the Mets biggest concern lays with the relievers who have blown a couple of games down the stretch. The Mets showed another example of this storyline during the last game of their previous series against the Cardinals as they received an excellent game from Noah Syndergaard but a late-game collapse allowed the Cardinals to win in extra innings. Noah Syndergaard went 7.1 innings striking out 7 guys in the process and left the game with the Mets up 2-1. The Mets allowed a bottom of the 8th inning run to come across to tie the ball game which can be accredited to closer Jeurys Familia. The Mets were also able to get a run across in the top of the 10th innings to take back the lead but this time reliever Paul Sewald let a run come across in what could have been his first save of the season. The Mets need to figure out their bullpen inconsistencies if they have true aspirations of competing for a championship come this postseason.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

Rebuilding Year…Again

The San Diego Padres have been the laughing stock of the MLB for a while now as the Padres have not witnessed a winning season since 2010 or a playoff appearance since 2006, so what exactly have the Padres been doing over the last 8 years to rebuild their team? The Padres have been trying to rebuild over the last few years and they do have the best farm system in all of baseball, but a combination of stupid moves from management and the youngsters not developing to their full potential has planted the Padres to the bottom of the NL West. One of the moves that management is scratching their head with is the contract that they gave Eric Hosmer as he has not played up to his contract. Hosmer signed a 144 million dollar contract this past season to come to San Diego from Kansas City but his play tells us otherwise as he has only delivered 4 RBIs and has whiffed 26 times on the season as he has guys playing better than him on rookie contracts. One guy who has been playing up to his contract is closer Brad Hand who signed a 19 million dollar contract. Hand has been great when given the opportunity to close games out as he has 6 on the season to go along with a 1.46 ERA. The Padres need to receive more production out of Eric Hosmer if they don’t want to add another laughing product to the long list of stuff the Padres have done.

Against The Spread Selection: New York Mets

My reason for the pick :

The New York Mets struggled in their recent road stretch and although they are still on the road San Diego isn’t very good and shouldn’t pose a threat to the New York Mets. Wheeler has been a really effective pitcher in the past for the Mets and although his stat line isn’t Cy Young looking numbers he has been a good back-end of the rotation guy. Mets wrap up the road series with a win.
