Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Oakland Athletics vs Houston Astros
The defending World Series champs look to close out another home series as they will play game 3 of a 3 game series against AL West opponent in the Oakland Athletics. This is the first series of the season between these two opponents and they will meet again on 5/7 for a 3 game series in Oakland.
Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :
The Oakland Athletics have finished in last place of the AL West for 3 consecutive years but this year is looking to have a different outcome as the A’s have played above expectations this season. The A’s are enjoying production from two of their older guys on the team in Khris Davis and Jed Lowrie who sit 1st and 2nd on the team in both HRs and RBIs. Jed Lowrie has 6 HRs and 24 RBIs on the season as well as leads the team with a batting average of .352, and he is well on his way to a career year in his 11th season. Lowrie’s best year came back in 2013 where he had 15 HRs and 75 RBIs with a batting average of .290. Khris Davis has quietly gone about his business the last 2 seasons as he has been a 40+ HR and 100+ RBI hitter since 2016 and looks like he might have another one of those years as he has 7 HRs and 23 RBIs through his first 25 games. The A’s are hoping that they can find more production out of Kendall Graveman who has been one of the worst starters in all of the MLB in 2018 as he is 0-5 through his first 6 starts as well as has an ERA of 8.89. They also want to see more out of their bullpen especially in veteran Chris Hatcher who although is 2-0 on the season has an ERA of 11.37. Hatcher came over to the A’s last year before the trade deadline from the Los Angeles Dodgers and had a pretty good 2nd half of the season as he had a 3.52 ERA so the A’s expect more out of him.
Houston Astros's Latest Performance :
Astros Take Back Over
The Houston Astros have not had a World Series hangover problem like the Los Angeles Dodgers who sit towards the bottom of their division, but rather look like the favorite in the American League once again. The Astros have received a great season from their starting pitchers but have also seen production from a variety of guys from the batter’s box as 12 different guys on the Astros have hit an HR in the early going. The HR leader for the Astros has been veteran Josh Reddick who has 6 on the season which is already half the HRs he had in 2017. Reddick last had a 20 HR season back in 2015 but with the pace that Reddick is on, he should hit 20 by the month of July. The Astros have shown how good their depth is within their starting rotation as 3 of the Astros starters have under a 2.00 ERA as the combination of Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, and Charlie Morton have an average ERA of 1.50 as well as a record of a 9-1. The Astros hope that their former ace in Dallas Keuchel gets back on track as he has struggled in 2018 with a record of 1-3 and an ERA of 3.10. Reliever Chris Devenski has been great once again for the Astros as he has pitched in 11 innings this season only giving up 1 earned run to go along with 12 strikeouts. If the Astros keep pace they should have another 100 win season as well as a deep postseason run.
How Oakland Athletics & Houston Astros Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Oakland is 13-12, 5-6 on the road.
Los Angeles is 17-9, 7-5 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Trevor Cahill (1-0, 2.25 ERA) for the Oakland Athletics vs. Gerrit Cole (2-1, 1.29 ERA) for the Houston Astros.
Cahill last started on 4/23 against the Rangers where he went 5 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits in a ND.
Cole last started on 4/23 against the Angels where he went 7 innings striking out 8 guys in a L.
Oakland and Houston both rank in the top 5 in runs scored.
Houston is the top team in team ERA and Oakland ranks in the bottom 15.
Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros
My reason for the pick :
Gerrit Cole has been arguably one of the best pitchers this season as he has been dealing in 2018, and I see him having no problems in this one. The A’s have put together a couple of good series as of recent, but they are going against one of the best teams in the MLB in this one and I just don’t think they have what it takes in this matchup. Astros wrap up the series with a win.
