Colorado Rockies vs Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs open up another home series as they will host game 1 of a 3 game set against National League foe in the Colorado Rockies. These two teams last met as recent as last weekend where the Cubs won the series 2-1. This will be the last series between these two teams of the 2018 regular season.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

Interesting Win

The Colorado Rockies have the roster to compete as they have a deep batting order as well as some serviceable pitchers who can pick up some quality wins, but the Rockies problem over the last 2 years has been putting both facets of the game together as when their pitching is good their hitting is bad or vice versa. The Rockies picked up an interesting win on 4/27 against the Miami Marlins as they only won 1-0 and received their offense from an unlikely source. Starter Tyle Anderson left the game after only 1 inning for the Rockies with a heart issue which left the Rockies having to dig deep into their bullpen. Antonio Senzatela came into relief for Anderson and gave the Rockies 3.2 shutout innings giving up only 1 hit which is satisfying for Senzatela as he has entered this appearance on a rough stretch as he had a 7.90 ERA. Senzatela is essentially the long reliever for this ballclub as he started in 20 games last season where he was a very effective starter as he posted a 10-5 record. The lone run in this ball game came from the bat of no one other than Antonio Senzatela as he hit an RBI double in the top of the 5th inning. The Rockies top guys struggled from the batter’s box as DJ LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon, Nolan Arenado, and Ian Desmond went a combined 1 for 13 from the plate. The Rockies cannot bank on their pitchers winning the game with their bats every game and will need more offense out of their big guns moving forward.

Can The Cubs Put It Together?

The Chicago Cubs were expected to get back to the World Series in 2017 after they won it in 2016 but did not exceed expectations which has the city of Chicago buzzing for another big year in 2018. The Cubs have started off 2018 sluggish as they have not been able to find consistency in their pitching staff, especially in the starters. The Cubs have been pretty good on the hitting end of things as they have been led by Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber who were both vital pieces in the Cubs 2016 championship run. Baez and Schwarber have both been HR hitting juggernauts as they both lead the Cubs with 7 a piece which might be a good thing considering their best power hitter in Kris Bryant has not heated up yet as he only has 2. The Cubs look like they finally have put it together on the pitching end of things as the Cubs were able to win the first two games of their last series by holding the Brewers to only 2 runs. Perhaps the most satisfying performance came out of their 126 million dollar man in Yu Darvish who struggled through his first 4 starts. Darvish started on 4/27 where he was able to go 6 shutout innings giving up only 3 hits while striking out 8 guys. Darvish entered his previous start with an ERA of 6.86 but after his recent start he has lowered it down to a 5.26. The Cubs need Darvish to keep on track if they want to not only make the World Series but let alone make the playoffs.

Against The Spread Selection: Chicago Cubs

My reason for the pick :

The biggest thing that has held back this Chicago Cubs team from being on top of the division has been the inconsistency from their starting pitchers but recently the Cubs have turned it around and have started to put some nice wins together behind their pitching. The Cubs are also pitching Lester who has been one of the better starters for Chicago this season. Chicago should be able to put runs up on the board against Freeland who has struggled this season. Pick Chicago to win.
