Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks return home from an East Coast trip and will open a 4 game home series against NL West rival in the Los Angeles Dodgers. These two teams have met 6 times already this season where Arizona won 5 of those matchups. After this series is completed these two teams will meet again on 5/8 for a 2 game series in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :
The Los Angeles Dodgers have started the 2018 season way different than was expected out of a 2017 World Series runner-up as they sit in 4th place in the NL West. The story through the first two weeks was that they were just enduring a hangover and will be back on top soon, but the story has now shifted to the Dodgers not being a good team. The Dodgers have one of the best players in the MLB in Clayton Kershaw, but even he is struggling this year and his most recent start gave fans a small recap of how their season is going. The Los Angeles Dodgers were -400 favorites over the Miami Marlins as they had Kershaw on the mound against one of the worst teams in the MLB, but the Marlins were able to rattle Kershaw and storm to an 8-6 victory which is the biggest baseball upset since 2007. Kershaw was only able to last 5 innings as he gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and even worse walked 6 guys. Kershaw has struggled all season as he currently posts a 1-4 record, but his record tells a different story than his actual output as he still has an ERA of 2.84 and 42 strikeouts. The Dodgers have not been able to give Kershaw and his pitching staff the support needed to win as they only have 2 guys that have double-digit RBIs. The Dodgers unfortunately do not look like a playoff team in 2018 as the Diamondbacks have taken the reigns of the NL West and the NL East has 3 potential playoff teams.
Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :
Production Without Main Guys
The Arizona Diamondbacks have shown that they are true contenders in the NL West as they have continued to win games not only in the division but against other National League teams. The Diamondbacks have looked like contenders this season without two of their best bats in the lineup as Jake Lamb and Steven Souza have been out for the whole season with an injury. Jake Lamb is coming off a career year with Arizona as he had 30 HRs and 105 RBIs, but Souza is a new face who came over from Tampa Bay during the offseason where he is also coming off a career year with 30 HRs and 78 RBIs. The Diamondbacks have been able to slide by without the production from these guys in the lineup as some unexpected sources have stepped up. A.J. Pollock was a bottom of the lineup guy in 2017, but given the injuries and departures from last year’s lineup, he has moved up to the 3 spot where he hasn’t disappointed as Pollock currently has 6 HRs and 19 RBIs which are both team highs. The Diamondbacks need to find a little more production from the bottom of their lineup as the combination of Nick Ahmed, Daniel Descalso, Jarrod Dyson, and Alex Avila are all consistent starters but all bat under .200 and have racked up over 68 strikeouts.

Against The Spread Selection: Arizona Diamondbacks
My reason for the pick :
If the Marlins can beat Kershaw in his home ballpark why can’t the best team in the NL do it in their home ballpark? Greinke may not be off to a good start in 2018 but the Dodgers offense isn’t an offense that will scare very many pitchers. The Diamondbacks have been really good at home this season while Los Angeles has been average on the road. Arizona has beaten up on LA all season and nothing changes here. Pick Arizona to win at home.
