New York Yankees vs Houston Astros

The Houston Astros look to open a 4 game home series against American League foe in the New York Yankees. These two teams met in the 2017 ALCS where the Astros won in game 7. Both teams have enjoyed good starts to the season as they both sit towards the top of their respective divisions. These two teams won’t meet again until 5/28 when Houston travels to New York for a 3 game set.

New York Yankees's Latest Performance :

Inconsistency In Bullpen

The New York Yankees were fighting to getting over .500 at this point last week, but the Yankees have put together a nice win streak as they enter this series winners of 8 out of the last 10 to put themselves in prime striking distance of the 1st place Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have enjoyed the production of the prime hitters in the lineup as the combination of Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Didi Gregorius, and Giancarlo Stanton have 27 HRs and 82 RBIs which is a huge reason they have been successful. One of the downfalls for the New York Yankees has been the inconsistency of some of their main relievers out of the bullpen. Dellin Betances and Tommy Kahnle are coming off solid 2017 campaigns where they posted a 2.73 ERA with 196 strikeouts, but in 2018 the duo has struggled as their ERA sits at a 5.77 with 28 strikeouts. On the positive side of things, Chasen Shreve and Aroldis Chapman have been great out of the bullpen as Shreve has come into games when the opposing teams are ready to explode and Chapman has been a really effective closer. Shreve has appeared in 10.1 innings this season only giving up 1 earned run in those innings. Chapman struggled in 2017 as he lost his closer role for a small amount of time but has not disappointed this year as he has 4 saves with 19 strikeouts.

Houston Astros 's Latest Performance :

Can Astros Win Again?

The Houston Astros from 2007 to 2014 were one of the worst teams in the MLB as they struggled to crack through from the bottom of the division, but the Astros have developed their homegrown talent and hired AJ Hinch which has translated into the Astros being one of the best teams in the MLB. The Astros are coming off their first franchise World Series championship and have looked like prime candidates to win another one in 2018. The Astros have enjoyed some great production from some of their known guys as Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve have picked up where they left off in 2017. Carlos Correa has been great over the last 7 games as he has gone 11 for 24 (.458) from the plate with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs to help contribute to a team-best batting average of .341. Jose Altuve is coming off an MVP season where he hit .346 from the plate and Altuve has picked up where he left off from in 2017 as he is hitting .333 in 2018. The Astros have been really good on the pitching end of things especially in their starting pitching as the 5 starters which includes Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, and Charlie Morton have combined for an ERA of 2.45. The Astros can rely on any of these 5 starters to give them a winning effort which will play vital to the Astros in the playoffs as they don’t have to overthrow the top end of the rotation guys.

Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros

My reason for the pick :

This is a potential preview of a postseason matchup as these two teams met in the American League finals last year and we should be in for a good game. This is a matchup of fire against fire as the best hitting team will take on the best pitching team. Gray has been awful for the Yankees this season as the bright lights of New York have really taken a toll on the small-town Tennesee kid. Charlie Morton on the other hand has been awesome for the Astros as he has been shutting opponents out all year. The Astros still have the ability to score runs and combining that with their pitching abilities result in a W at home.
