Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Oakland Athletics vs Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners are happy to return home to Safeco Field after a fairly good road trip and will look to continue their hot play as they will host AL West rival in the Oakland Athletics. These two teams met for a 3 game series from 4/13-4/15 where Seattle took 2 out of the 3 games. After this series, these two teams won’t meet again until 5/22 where Oakland will host Seattle for 3 games.
Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :
Inconsistency Killing Oakland
The Oakland A’s have shown us the potential they have as a ball club as they were able to beat up on the Boston Red Sox last week, and they continue to show promise as they beat up on the Astros in the first game of their series. The problem for the A’s has been keeping their consistency as they followed up their big win against the Astros with a blowout loss as the pitching and hitting were straight dominated. Daniel Mengden entered his 4/28 start against the Astros on a high note after a good outing against the Red Sox, but Mengden reverted to his start of the season self as he gave up 4 earned runs on 6 hits in only 2.1 innings of work. The bullpen did Mengden no justice as the combination of Daniel Coulombe and Wilmer Font gave up 5 more earned runs in only 2.2 innings of work. Daniel Coulombe has struggled over his recent appearances as he has given up over 7 earned runs in just 3 innings of work. The top of the batting lineup for the A’s didn’t play too hot either as the 1-5 hitters went 0 for 15 in the ballgame. Veteran Jed Lowrie has slowed down after a hot start to the season as over the last 7 games Lowrie is batting only .240 which has lowered his batting average to .372 to a .342. The A’s want to get back on track sooner rather than later as the AL West has been one of the best divisions this season and you don’t want to fall too far behind.
Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :
The Seattle Mariners have the roster needed to make the playoffs, but the Mariners problem has been putting both their pitching and hitting together in a single ball game as they have experienced some lopsided games this season. The Seattle Mariners have been able to string some nice wins together on their recent road stand and combine that with the fact that the Angels have been struggling as of recent Seattle finds themselves in prime position in the AL West. The Mariners were able to explode for 12 runs on 12 hits against one of the top pitching teams in the MLB as they slaughtered the Cleveland Indians in a 4/28 matchup. The Mariners enjoyed a huge game from their SS Jean Segura as he went 3 for 5 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs as he becomes the 2nd Mariner to reach 20 RBIs in the young 2018 season. The rest of the offense came from Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, Kyle Seager, and Ryon Healy as they all had 2 RBIs apiece. The one thing that the Mariners want to tighten up moving forward is the starting pitchers as the rotation has been a dumpster fire for Seattle. The combination of Felix Hernandez, Mike Leake, James Paxton, Marco Gonzales, and Erasmo Ramirez have posted over a 6.47 ERA, and have relied on their offense to save them as they starters still post a .500 record at 9-9.
How Oakland Athletics & Seattle Mariners Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Oakland is 14-13, 6-7 on the road.
Seattle is 15-11, 5-5 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Andrew Triggs (2-0, 4.70 ERA) for the Oakland Athletics vs. Felix Hernandez (3-2, 4.96 ERA) for the Seattle Mariners.
Triggs last started on 4/24 against the Rangers where he went 6 innings giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits in a W.
Hernandez last started on 4/25 against the White Sox where he went 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits in a W.
Oakland ranks inside the top 5 in runs scored while Seattle ranks in the bottom 15.
Oakland and Seattle both rank in the bottom 10 in team ERA.
Against The Spread Selection: Seattle Mariners
My reason for the pick :
The Seattle Mariners have made up some ground in the AL West as Los Angeles has dropped 7 of their last 10 games which has them not only a game outside 2nd place, but in striking distance of taking over the AL West. The Mariners know what’s in store as they have been craving the postseason and lucky for them they have a former Cy Young winner on the mound in Felix Hernandez. Hernandez may not be his old self but he has been serviceable in 2018 and I think he steps up his game in this ball game as Seattle wins at home.
