Oakland Athletics vs Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners return back to Safeco Field for a 10:10 first pitch as they close out a 3 game home series against AL West rival in the Oakland Athletics. These two teams last met for a series from 4/13-4/15 in Seattle where the Mariners won 2 out of the 3 games. These two teams will meet again on 5/22 for a 3 game series in Oakland.

Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :

Manaea Rolling

The Oakland Athletics may finish the year in 4th place and possibly below .500, but the Oakland Athletics have seen some of their young guys grow up in front of their eyes as well as the revival of some careers. Sean Manaea may still not be known by his name but rather the guy who threw the no-hitter against the Red Sox, but he will develop into a household name in the near future. Sean Manaea has been a starter for the A’s for 3-years now and 2018 has been his best by far as he enters this series 4-2 with a 1.03 ERA which is in the top 5 for starters in the MLB. As Manaea is enjoying a great season Kendall Graveman is not as the 5th year starter looks lost as he enters this series with a 0-5 record and a 8.89 ERA. The difference between good teams and average teams is the depth of the rotation and this is what the A’s lack as the back end of the rotation has been a disaster. On the hitting end of things, Jed Lowrie looks revived as the 34-year-old is well on his way to having a career season and maybe even appear in his first all-star game. Lowrie leads the A’s in RBIs and batting average as he has 27 RBIs and a .339 batting average, and not to mention sits 2nd on the team in HRs as he has 6. The A’s already won the season as every playoff team has a dominant ace, and although the A’s aren’t a playoff team they have a foundation to build around moving forward.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

Hot Hitting Mariners

The Seattle Mariners were able to put up a ton of runs last series against one of the best pitching teams in the MLB in the Cleveland Indians, but this did not phase the Mariners as they put up 22 runs in the last two games which helped propel them to a series win as they won 3 out of the 4 games. The Mariners have been led by Mitch Haniger who is enjoying a career year in his 3rd season as he is leading the Mariners with 10 HRs and 27 RBIs. Haniger has almost already toppled his season total of 2017 as he ended last year with 16 HRs and 47 RBIs in the 96 games he appeared in. Haniger looks to continue leading this offense as well as the MLB as his HR and RBI stat line is good for top 3 in the American League. Robinson Cano is also having a good year in his 14th season as he is batting over .313 this season which is above his career batting average of a .305. Cano is only 2 years removed from having a career year where he hit 39 HRs and 103 RBIs, but Cano has taken a new approach to his game as more of a contact hitter as he only has 3 HRs and 14 RBIs. If there is one aspect of the game that the Mariners want to tighten up on it’s their starting pitcher as the 5 man rotation has an ERA of a 6.36 which cancels out their good offense as they find themselves in high scoring battles with opponents.

How Oakland Athletics & Seattle Mariners Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Oakland is 14-14, 6-8 on the road.

Seattle is 16-11, 5-5 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Sean Manaea (4-2, 1.03 ERA) for the Oakland Athletics vs. Erasmo Ramirez (0-2, 10.24 ERA) for the Seattle Mariners.

Manaea last started on 4/27 against the Astros where he went 7 innings striking out 7 guys in a W.

Ramirez last started on 4/27 against the Indians where he went 5 innings giving up 6 earned runs on 9 hits in a L.

Seattle and Oakland both rank in the top 10 in runs scored.

Oakland ranks in the bottom 15 in team ERA while Seattle ranks in the bottom 5.

Against The Spread Selection: Oakland A's

My reason for the pick :

As we talked about Manaea has been amazing this season as he shutout the Red Sox and Astros in back to back games and he gets another opportunity to show his worth here against another fairly good team. Ramirez has been awful for the Mariners as both starts have been a dumpster fire for him and not much looks like it will improve in this matchup as the A’s sit outside the top 5 in runs scored. Oakland wins.

Betting trends for Oakland Athletics:

  • The over is 13-5 as underdogs this season.
