Pittsburgh Pirates vs Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals return back to Nationals Park for a 1:05 first pitch to close out a 4 game home series as they will host National League foe in the Pittsburgh Pirates. After this series, these two teams will not meet again until 7/9 when Washingont travels to Pittsburgh for a 3 game series.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
The Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the hottest teams to start the 2018 season and after a little stretch of bad games the Pirates found themselves sliding back down the standings, but the Pirates have found themselves entering this series on a 5 game win streak after sweeping the former first place team in the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates started rookie Nick Kingham to close out the series against the Cardinals and he had quite a career debut as he entered the 7th inning with a no-hitter. Kingham eventually gave up a hit but he ended his first career stat line with 7 shutout innings and 9 strikeouts to secure his first career win. The Pirates were able to close out a 5-0 win with relievers Michael Feliz and Edgar Santana closing out the final 2 innings giving up only 2 hits. The Pirates have been led by their catcher Francisco Cervelli as he leads the team in RBIs with 20, but his back up Elias Diaz has done a good job when Cervelli gets a rest. Diaz went 3 for 4 in this game with 2 RBIs which helped contribute to his season stat line of a .484 batting average. Gregory Polanco has gone silent from the plate as of recent as he had another 0 for 5 ball game which has his batting average at a .196.
Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :
Another Good Outing From Gonzalez
The Washington Nationals have been dependant on the success of their pitchers this season as outside Bryce Harper the Nationals haven’t received much of any production from anyone. The Nationals have been led by their starters all season as the combination of Max Scherzer, Gio Gonzalez, Stephen Strasburg, and Tanner Roark have kept this Nationals team in ballgames as they have combined for an ERA of 2.92 and 165 strikeouts, but the lack of bats has given these starters a record of 11-8. Gio Gonzalez got the start to close out their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and he received just enough support from his bats to pick up his 3rd win of the season. Gonzalez was able to give the Nationals 7 innings of work striking out 8 guys in route to a Nationals 3-1 victory. Brandon Kintzler came in for a good inning of work in the 8th inning to set up their closer Sean Doolittle who picked up his 5th save of the season. The little offense can be accredited to the bats on Michael Taylor and Matt Wieters who both had a solo HR which is both their 3rd HR of the season. Bryce Harper has struggled as of recent as he only has 4 hits in his last 22 ABs which has lowered his batting average down to a .253 on the season.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates
My reason for the pick :
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals are trending in two different directions as the Pirates have moved into first place while Washington has solidified their spot in 4th place. Trevor Williams has been the best pitcher for this Pirates squad and nothing is pointing to the Nationals rattling him as they have not been really good in scoring runs this season. Pittsburgh wins on the road.
