Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Toronto Blue Jays vs Cleveland Indians

Game 2 of a doubleheader between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cleveland Indians will take place on Thursday at 4:40 pm EST at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.  Currently, the Toronto Blue Jays occupy the 3rd spot in the AL East division while the Cleveland Indians are 1st place in the AL Central.  The doubleheader between these two teams will be played due to two consecutive postponements in their last series earlier in the season.  Game 1 however, was won by the Blue Jays 8-4 on 4-15.  In recent meetings, the Blue Jays are 2-4 against the Indians which includes a 3-game sweep by the Indians in their last meeting at Progressive Field on 7-21-2017.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

The Cleveland Indians come into this matchup losers of 4 of their last 6 games to where the O/U was 5-1.  After a series in which they swept the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 on 4-23, they tied the next series versus the Chicago Cubs while losing the next series against the Seattle Mariners (1-3) on 4-29.  In fact, in the Seattle series, the Indians, after their 6-5 game 2 victory, was outscored 22-8 in their final 2 games.  They will certainly look to get back to solid, timely hitting along with lock down pitching performances from their deep and talented staff.

For the season, the Indians are averaging 3.65 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .223 (29th), 36 homers (4th) along with 16 stolen bases (8th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.53 (7th) with 217 strikeouts (23rd), along with 16 quality starts, good for 2nd in the MLB.

Jose Ramirez (.260 BA on 100 AB) and Francisco Lindor (.229 BA on 105 AB) have spearheaded the Indians offensive attack this season.  Yonder Alonso (.226 BA on 93 AB) and Edwin Encarnacion (.167 BA on 96 AB) have struggled a bit, yet, continue to be offensive leaders for the Indians.  Jason Kipnis (.167 BA on 102 AB) has also struggled, however, looks to heat things up against a Toronto pitching staff that is known to give up a few runs.

The Indians possess a host of solid pitchers in which to choose from.  Corey Kluber (4-1, 45.1 IP, 11 R, 26 H, 5 HR, 9 BB, 47 SO, 2.18 ERA) and Trevor Bauer (2-2, 33.2 IP, 9 R, 24 H, 2 HR, 13 BB, 35 SO, 2.41 ERA) have been the most consistent thus far.  Mike Clevenger (2-0, 31.2 IP, 9 R, 27 H, 1 HR, 9 BB, 22 SO, 2.56 ERA) and Carlos Carrasco (4-1, 38 IP, 14 R, 29 H, 5 HR, 7 BB, 32 SO, 3.08 ERA) have been very solid in their own right thus far in the season and are bright spots for Cleveland’s pitching staff.

Cleveland Indians 's Latest Performance :

Since their last meeting with Cleveland on 4-13, the Blue Jays have been losers of 7 of their last 13 games and are only 2-6 in their last 8 contests.  After a sweep against the Royals on 4-18, the Blue Jays lost their next 3 series (against Yankees, Boston, and Rangers).  During this time, their opponents outscored them by a combined 48-29 runs.  This will be a difficult matchup for the Blue Jays in that they have not had much success against this Indians team in the past, particularly on the road.  However, they say that to be the best, which Toronto hopes to be, they must beat one of the best and most explosive teams in the AL East.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 5.26 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .231 (24th), 38 homers (3rd) along with 10 stolen bases (24th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.12 (16th) with 243 strikeouts (14th) along with 10 quality starts on the season (21st).

Kevin Pillar (.310 BA on 100 AB), Justin Smoak (.258 BA on 97 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.231 BA on 91 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.  Pitcher JA Happ (4-1, 36 IP, 15 R, 30 H, 6 HR, 7 BB, 50 SO with an ERA of 3.50) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.  Aaron Sanchez (1-2, 31.2 IP, 13 R, 27 H, 2 HR, 15 BB, 23 SO with an ERA of 3.69) and Marco Estrada (2-2, 27 IP, 18 R, 30 H, 7 HR, 9 BB, 23 SO with an ERA of 6.00) have not been as consistent, yet, very serviceable components for the Blue Jays.

How Toronto Blue Jays & Cleveland Indians Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Blue Jays are 15-12 ATS while the O/U is 13-12-2.  On the other hand, the Cleveland Indians are 14-12 ATS while the O/U is 11-15.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

These two teams match up well in that they both need some re-grouping at a time where, recently, they have come out on the losing side far too many times as they would have liked.  On one hand, the visiting Blue Jays are slightly above average ATS on the road (6-5) however, the Indians are 5-9 ATS, yet, 8-6 on the money line at Progressive Field.  This will be a game in which both pitching staffs will have to step up with solid performances in which to set the pace for game 2 along with come out with the much-needed victory.

Against The Spread Selection: Cleveland Indians

My reason for the pick :

The Indians have really handled the Blue Jays in past matchups, particularly, at Progressive Field.  Despite the losses that they have suffered lately, a 3-game set at home against the Toronto Blue Jays could be just the team that they need to matchup against in which to get back on the right track.  Nonetheless, the pitching staff for Cleveland has struggled lately, and they really need to have a good showing in game 2 in which to regain the confidence that they possessed before their mini-slide.  In all, I will pick the Indians to figure it out, so to speak, and take the victory on Thursday.
