Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Minnesota Twins vs Chicago White Sox
Game 2 of a 4-game set between the visiting Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox will take place at Guaranteed Rate Park in Chicago, Illinois, on Friday night at 8:10 pm EST. The Minnesota Twins occupy the 3rd place slot in the AL Central while the White Sox are in 4th place within the division. This will be the 2nd series of the year between these two teams, however, the Twins picked up the 4-0 road win on 4-12, however, the remaining 3 games were postponed due to weather conditions. In recent matchups, the Twins have won 12 of the last 20 matchups, yet, the White Sox have won 3 of the last 5 at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Minnesota Twins's Latest Performance :
The Minnesota Twins come into this game losers of 4 of their last 5 games. In fact, after the 3-game postponement against the White Sox earlier in the season, the Twins lost 9 of their last 11 games to where the O/U was 8-4. During this stretch, the Twins have been swept by the Tampa Bay Rays along with the New York Yankees while losing a 3-game set to the Cincinnati Reds (2-1) on 4-29. With the way the Twins have dominated the White Sox in the past, I assume that they will be looking to maintain their focus in which to wins some games and attempt to get back into the swing of things in the AL Central.
For the season, the Twins are averaging 4.04 runs per game (19th) with a team batting average of .238 (19th), 25 homers (24th) along with 9 stolen bases (27th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.26 (29th) with 213 strikeouts (25th) along with 8 quality starts on the year (26th).
Eduardo Escobar (.308 BA on 78 AB), Joe Mauer (.293 BA on 75 AB), Max Kepler (.280 BA on 82 AB), and Brian Dozier (.260 BA on 100 AB) have been consistent within the Twins offense this season; However, Eddie Rosario (.230 BA on 87 AB) and Miguel Sano (.212 BA on 80 AB) have each been instrumental in their offensive attack as well.
Pitcher Kyle Gibson (1-1, 27 IP, 11 R, 20 H, 1 HR, 14 BB, 30 SO, 3.33 ERA) and Jose Berrios (2-3, 34.2 IP, 14 R, 26 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 36 SO, 3.63 ERA) have led the Twins pitching staff thus far. Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 32 IP, 14 R, 28 H, 7 HR, 16 BB, 27 SO, 3.94 ERA) has also been solid for Minnesota this year.
Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :
The Chicago White Sox have had a rough go of it as well, losing 10 of their last 16 games to where the O/U was 7-5-2. After their 3-game postponement against the Twins, the White Sox also went on a slide losing 10 of their next 14 games in sweeps to the Oakland Athletics (4-18) and Houston Astros (4-22) followed by a 1-2 series loss to the Seattle Mariners on 4-25 before they were able to pick up their first series win in a few weeks versus the lowly Kansas City Royals (3-2) on 4-29. Despite losing the last 2 games of the Royals series, the White Sox look to carry this momentum into their upcoming matchup against the Twins in hopes for similar results.
For the season, the White Sox are averaging 4.00 runs per game (20th) with a team batting average of .246 (12th), 34 homers (7th), along with 25 stolen bases (2nd). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.06 (27th) with 187 strikeouts (29th) along with 10 quality starts this season (19th).
Tim Anderson (.267 BA on 101 AB), Yoan Moncada (.267 BA on 105 Ab), Yolmer Sanchez (.263 BA on 95 AB), and Jose Abreu (.263 BA on 99 AB) have been the offensive leaders for the White Sox this season. Nicky Delmonico (.254 BA on 71 AB) and Matt Davidson (.253 BA on 87 AB) have also been solid at the plate this season.
Reynaldo Lopez (0-2, 30.1 IP, 9 R, 22 H, 3 HR, 15 BB, 25 SO, 1.78 ERA) and James Shields (0-2, 29.1 IP, 20 R, 33 H, 2 HR, 17 BB, 15 SO, 6.14 ERA) have pitched the most innings this year for the White Sox, however, the Carson Fulmer (2-0) has been solid this year at the mound as well pitching 25 innings while allowing 14 runs on 24 hits, 3 homers, 13 walks, and 18 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.32.
How Minnesota Twins & Chicago White Sox Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Twins are 9-15 ATS while the O/U is 13-11. On the other hand, the White Sox are 8-18 ATS while the O/U is 12-12-2.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will be an interesting matchup in that both the White Sox and Twins have had rough seasons thus far and are looking to garner up a string of wins in which to gain some confidence for the long season ahead. While there were times during the young season where both teams showed small signs of cohesiveness, the fact is their offense has not shown up consistently. Nonetheless, both these AL Central foes will battle each other in which to gain some ground within the division.
Totals Selection: Under
My reason for the prediction :
The bottom line is that the under has certainly been the norm when these two teams get together. With very cool offenses along with relatively average pitching staffs on both squads, I see this matchup as being one that is more defensive, as both teams will be locked in to allow this series to be the starting point in increasing their position in the division. In all, choose the under for Friday’s game 1 matchup as I do not see the scoreboard lighting up much against these two squads.
