Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Pittsburgh Pirates vs Milwaukee Brewers
Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers will begin on Friday at 8:10 pm EST at Miller Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently, the Pirates occupy the top spot in the NL Central while the Brewers are 4th place in the division. This will be the 1st matchup amongst these two teams this year, however, in recent matchups, the Pirates have won 9 of the last 19 matchups while they have fallen short in losing 5 of their last 8 at Miller Field.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
The Brewers, on the other hand, though up and down early in the season, has since been on a tear winning their last 7 games. The problem is that after a 7-game tear, they lost 4 of their last 5 games. After beating the Reds at home in a 3-game set 2-1, the Brewers swept the Marlins and Royals before running into a hot Chicago Cubs team which swept them in a 4-game set on 4-29. This was surely a hit to the confidence that the Brewers had begun to display throughout their winning streak; Nonetheless, they look to turn the tide and get a win on Friday against a reeling Pittsburgh team that cannot seem to get a break (or a win) at this time.
For the season, the Brewers are averaging 5 runs per game (8th) with a team batting average of .260 (5th), 28 homers (19th), and 12 stolen bases on the year (20th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.00 (15th) with 224 strikeouts (20th), along with 14 quality starts (4th).
Lorenzo Cain (.292 BA on 96 AB), Ryan Braun (.256 BA on 90 AB), Travis Shaw (.253 BA on 103 AB), and Domingo Santana (.236 BA on 89 AB) have been the most consistent offensive weapons for the Pirates this season.
Chase Anderson (2-2, 34.2 IP, 11 R, 25 H, 7 HR, 10 BB, 23 SO, 2.86 ERA) and Jhoulys Chacin (2-1, 29.1 IP, 16 R, 32 H, 4 HR, 14 BB, 19 SO, 3.99 ERA) have been the bright spots for this Pirate staff. Zack Davies (2-3, 34 IP, 17 R, 31 H, 5 HR, 12 BB, 25 SO, 4.24 ERA) has also been solid on the mound this season for Pittsburgh.
Milwaukee Brewers's Latest Performance :
After a 3-game home set against the Colorado Rockies on 4-16 in which they lost 2-1, the Pittsburgh Pirates also had gone on to lose 7 of their next 8 games to where the O/U was 2-3-3. After a postponement in their 4-24 game 1 showdown at home versus the Detroit Tigers along with a 13-10 loss to the Tigers in game 2 on 4-25, the Pirates went on to win their next 5 games. During this stretch, they won game 3 and 4 of the Tigers’ series while sweeping fellow NL Central foe St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 on 4-29. They have, however, have lost their last 2 games of a 3-game set against the Washington Nationals. In all, the Rockies look to continue their streak against a Brewers team that has also been on a losing skid lately.
For the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates average 3.69 runs per game (25th) with a team batting average of .232 (23rd), 30 homers (16th) along with 19 stolen bases (4th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.14 (3rd) with 238 strikeouts (15th) along with 9 quality starts on the year (24th).
Corey Dickerson (.316 BA on 95 AB), Francisco Cervelli (.307 BA on 75 AB), Starling Marte (.288 BA on 111 AB), and Colin Moran (.288 BA on 80 AB) have been the most consistent hitters in the lineup for the Pirates this year. Jordy Mercer (.244 BA on 90 AB) and Josh Bell (.241 BA on 108 AB) have also been solid for Pittsburgh this year at the plate.
Trevor Williams (4-1, 35.1 IP, 9 R, 23 H, 1 HR, 17 BB, 23 SO, 2.29 ERA) and Ivan Nova (2-1, 38 IP, 14 R, 35 H, 4 HR, 4 BB, 30 SO, 3.32 ERA) have been shining stars on the mound for the Pirates this year while Steven Brault (2-1, 29 IP, 17 R, 24 H, 3 HR, 15 BB, 18 SO, 4.97 ERA) has also been solid in the rotation.
How Pittsburgh Pirates & Milwaukee Brewers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Pirates are 11-9 ATS while the O/U is 10-9-1. Onn the other hand, the Brewers are 14-10 ATS while the O/U is 10-14.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
These team matchup well at this point in the season because they have both had some rough patches lately. In games such as these with entail offenses that have seemingly gone cold, I tend to side towards the under. Combine that with the overall importance of this game 1 matchup in that every team wishes to begin each series on a positive note. In all, I expect this game to be a low scoring affair since the under has been so prevalent in the last few games for both teams, much so for the Brewers.
Totals Selection: Under
My reason for the prediction :
Again, with the Brewers offense being a bit cold at this point and the Pirates offense cranking up a bit after a string of wins, I feel that this series will depend heavily on both pitching staffs controlling the pace of this game in which to ultimately limit the amount of runs scored. With that being said, I expect both the Brewers along with the Pirates pitching staffs to match up well against the opposing hitters, thus confusing them enough to ensure that the score will be kept under the assigned total on Friday.
