Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Francisco Giants vs Atlanta Braves

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting San Francisco Giants and the Atlanta Braves will begin on Friday night at 7:35 pm EST at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Giants currently occupy the 3rd spot in the NL West just behind the Colorado Rockies while the Atlanta Braves occupy the 2nd spot in the NL East behind the NY Mets.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year between these two squads, however, in recent matchups, the Braves have won 4 of the 7 seven games while winning 3 out of 4 in Atlanta.

San Francisco Giants's Latest Performance :

The San Francisco Giants come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 4-1.  The Giants have seemed to pick up a bit of steam lately as they have won their last 3 series beginning with a 2-1 series win over the Los Angeles Angels on 4/22 along with a 2-1 series home win versus the Washington nationals on 4/25 ending with a 3-1 series win at home over the Los Angeles Dodgers on 4/29.  They have really picked up some serious steam and hope to continue their play in a Park that they have not had much success at in the recent meetings.

For the season, the Giants are averaging 3.57 runs per game (27th) with a team batting average of .238 (18th), 30 homers (17th) along with 13 stolen bases (16th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.94 (13th) with 216 strikeouts (24th) along with 12 quality starts (13th).

Brandon Belt (.317 BA on 82 AB) and Buster Posey (.271 BA on 85 AB) have been the most consistent hitter for the Giants this year.  Joe Panik ).267 BA on 90 AB) and Evan Longoria (.247 BA on 93 AB) have also been solid at the plate for San Francisco.

Johnny Queto (3-0, 3 R, 16 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 26 SO, 0.84 ERA) and Chris Stratton (2-2, 15 R, 25 H, 1 HR, 14 BB, 27 SO, 3.90 ERA) have been consistent on the mound for the Giants.  On the other hand, Ty Blach (2-3, 37.1 IP, 18 R, 40 H, 2 HR, 15 BB, 20 SO, 4.10 ERA) has also been solid for the Giants in 2018.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

Despite the Atlanta Braves having not been able to locate the proper consistency at certain points in this young season, they have played well in winning their last 3 series.  They preceded to make light work of the Philadelphia Phillies in winning the series 2-1 on 4-29.  In all, the Braves have won 4 of their last 5 games, altogether.  They look to continue this type of focus and consistency against a Giants team that have played them well in the past.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.50 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .268 (3rd), 30 homers (14th) along with 24 stolen bases (3rd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.64 (9th) with 257 strikeouts (9th) along with 10 quality starts on the season (18th).

Freddie Freeman (.314 BA on 102 AB), Nick Markakis (.302 BA on 106 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.300 BA on 80 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.293 BA on 116 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.287 BA on 108 AB) and Ender Incarte (.276 BA on 116 Ab) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (2-1, 32 IP, 11 R, 24 H, 4 HR, 15 BB, 39 SO, 2.53 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (4-0, 32 IP, 13 R, 31 H, 4 HR, 12 BB, 34 SO, 3.09 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (1-1, 27.2 IP, 16 R, 27 H, 3 HR, 14 BB, 34 SO, 4.23 ERA) and Julio Teheran (1-1, 30 IP, 15 R, 26 H, 6 HR, 16 BB, 29 SO, 4.50 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

How San Francisco Giants & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Atlanta Braves are 16-11 ATS while the O/U has been 13-11-3.  On the other hand, the San Francisco Giants are 14-14 ATS while the O/U is 13-15.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

These teams matchup well as they have both been very competitive lately.  This matchup should be a litmus test as to how far they have come to this point as well as to get a glimpse into the various intangibles that they may need to focus on moving forward.  Atlanta has played well ATS at SunTrust Park (8-4) while the Giants, despite them losing 3 of 4 in Atlanta, are currently 9-5 ATS on the road.  The test for both teams will be to somehow gain some sense of control over the opposing pitching staffs who happen to not be an overly outstanding bunch, yet, solid enough to get the job done as they have shown recently.

Totals Selection: Over

My reason for the prediction :

As stated, both teams have played very well lately, but, I could not conclude as to which team I would potentially lean towards in this game.  I mean, how can one choose a team when both have been very hot in their recent matchups and are seemingly primed to really be clicking on all cylinders?  It is for this reason that I will instead lean towards the over in that while I feel that the Giants will have much momentum come into this matchup, the Braves will be locked in and ready to play as well.  In all, I see both lineups will playing well in what will be a back and forth game (scoring-wise) in Friday’s matchup.
