Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Baltimore Orioles vs Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics return back to Oakland Alameda Coliseum for a 9:05 opening pitch as they will take on American League foe in the Baltimore Orioles in game 2 of a 3 game series. After this series is completed these two teams will not meet again until 9/11 as Baltimore will host Oakland in a 3 game series.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

Late Game Push, Not Enough

The Baltimore Orioles are struggling to find any kind of footing on this season as they have lost games after games, and it has now become decision time in Baltimore as should they let the youngsters play, or should they start trying to land some big name guys. The Orioles entered a road series against the Los Angeles Angels which was not a good matchup for this Baltimore team as the Angels were going to come out with fire after being swept by the Yankees. The Orioles put their ace on the mound in Dylan Bundy, but as we know Bundy has looked sluggish in some of his starts this season and nothing proved different in this matchup as he got wrecked for 5 runs on 7 hits in only 4.1 innings of work. The Orioles found themselves down 10-2 entering the 9th inning, but they did not roll over as they were able to put together a late-game rally to tally up 5 runs before falling in a 10-7 game. Jace Peterson provided some offense as a pinch-hitter in the 9th inning as he came in for Engelb Vielma and it proved successful as Peterson hit a triple bringing home 3 guys to bring the score closer. The Orioles hope that the integration of DH Mark Trumbo back into the starting lineup will help boost the offense of this team as Trumbo is only 2 years removed from a 47 HR season.

Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :

Late Game Push, Just Enough

The Oakland Athletics at one point in April was one of the best hitting teams in all of the MLB as they were putting runs up at ease, but in a 5/2 matchup against the Seattle Mariners, the first 7 innings would tell you different. The Mariners and A’s could eventually be a battle for the third spot in the AL West which makes every game between these two teams important. The Oakland Athletics were struck out 16 times by Mariners pitcher James Paxton as Stephen Piscotty, Khris Davis, and Chad Pinder were all sent back to the dugout 3 times. Once Paxton was pulled for the start of the 8th inning the Athletics found their swing as Jed Lowrie was able to hit a 2-run HR in the top of the 8th to tie the game, and would eventually be won by a solo HR from Mark Canha in the top of the 9th as they slugged out a 3-2 victory. Jed Lowrie now leads the Athletics in every major statistical category as he now has 8 HRs, 30 RBIs, and a batting average of .341. The pitching was sluggish to start as Brett Anderson started in his first game of the season, and as you would imagine rust came with the time off as he gave up the Mariners 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Blake Treinen was brought in to close the final two innings of the game which almost became disastrous as he was able to survive runners in scoring position 3 times.

How Baltimore Orioles & Oakland Athletics Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Baltimore is 8-22, 3-12 on the road.

Oakland is 15-15, 8-6 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Kevin Gausman (2-2, 4.15 ERA) for the Baltimore Orioles vs. Trevor Cahill (1-1, 3.00 ERA) for the Oakland Athletics.

Gausman last started on 4/29 against the Tigers where he went 5.2 innings giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits in a W.

Cahill last started on 4/29 against the Astros where he went 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits in a L.

Oakland ranks in the top 10 in runs scored while Baltimore ranks in the bottom 3.

Oakland and Baltimore both rank in the bottom 10 in team ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Oakland A's

My reason for the pick :

Although Gausman has been trending in the right direction as of recent I still don’t trust him as he gave up 6 runs against one of the worst offenses in baseball, the Minnesota Twins. The Baltimore Orioles have not been really good on the road this season as they have dropped an abundance of games while Oakland has been fairly good at home. Tha A’s have one of the hottest hitting offenses in baseball and they get the advantage to go against a bottom 5 pitching team in front of their own fans. Oakland wins.

Betting trends for Baltimore Orioles:

  • Baltimore is 4-14 as the underdog this season.

  • The over is 9-6 on the road this season.

Betting trends for Oakland Athletics:

  • Oakland is 6-2 against opponents outside the AL West this season.

  • The over is 12-10-1 with no rest this season.
