Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres
Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres will take place at PetCo Park in San Diego, California, on Saturday at 7:10 pm EST. Currently, the Dodgers are in 4th place in the NL West while the Padres are in the 5th place. This will be the 2nd series of the year amongst these two teams where the Dodgers swept the Padres in San Diego in a 3-game set on April 18th.
Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :
The Dodgers come into this matchup losers of 7 of the last 8 contests to where the O/U was 5-3. Before a 3-game series loss to the Marlins on April 25th, the Dodgers had won 2 straight series in a row, which included a sweep of the San Diego Padres on April 18th. After their loss at home to Miami, the Dodgers dropped a 4-game set against the San Francisco Giants on April 29th, while falling behind 2 games to nil in the first 2 games of a 4-game set against division leading Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers can only hope to play much more inspired ball against this Padres team this weekend, as they have dominated them in the past.
The Dodgers average 4.69 runs per game (12th) with a team batting average of .244 (14th), 26 homers (25th), along with 9 stolen bases (27th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.04 (14th) with 294 strikeouts (4th) along with 13 quality starts (12th).
Yasmani Grandal (.308 BA on 91 AB), Cody Bellinger (.279 BA on 111 AB), and Corey Seager (.267 BA on 101 AB) have been the leaders offensively for the Dodgers this season. Chris Taylor (.240 BA on 129 AB) and Yasiel Puig (.193 BA on 88 AB) have also been pivotal to the Dodger’s offensive attack.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-0) has pitched 28.1 innings while allowing 7 runs on 15 hits, 3 homers, 9 walks, and 34 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.22 while Clayton Kershaw (1-4) has pitched 44 innings while allowing 14 runs on 40 hits, 7 homers, 10 walks, and 48 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.86. Alex Wood (0-3) has pitched 35 innings while allowing 18 runs on 28 hits, 2 homers, 3 walks, and 30 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.11.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The Padres come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 3-2. Unfortunately, the Padres have not won a series since they were victorious in a home series against the San Francisco Giants on April 15th. Since then, the Padres have been swept by the Dodgers at home in a 3-game set followed by losing a road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They also went on to drop (2) 3-game sets versus the Rockies on the road and at home versus the Mets. San Diego, however, got back into the win column with a slim 3-2 road win versus the San Francisco Giants to tie their best of 3 series.
For the season, San Diego averages 3.94 runs per game (21st) with a team batting average of .228 (27th), 30 homers (19th) and 16 stolen bases on the year (12th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.41 (20th) with 279 strikeouts (7th) and 9 quality starts thus far (26th).
Jose Pirela (.254 BA on 126 AB), Eric Hosmer (.298 BA on 104 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.243 BA on 111 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad. Carlos Asuaje (.196 BA on 97 AB) has been relatively solid during the current campaign as well.
Joey Lucchesi (3-1) has been most solid of pitchers for the Padres this season as he has pitched 32.1 innings while allowing 12 runs on 26 hits, 3 homers, 10 walks, and 35 strikeouts while Tyson Ross (2-2) has pitched 35.2 innings while allowing 14 runs on 29 hits, 2 homers, 13 walks, and 40 strikeouts. Clayton Richard (1-3) has been very much inconsistent for the Padres this season, however, has pitched 33.2 innings while allowing 20 runs on 37 hits, 5 homers, 16 walks, and 26 strikeouts.
How Los Angeles Dodgers & San Diego Padres Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the year, the Los Angeles Dodgers are 12-17 ATS while the O/U is 16-13. On the other hand, the San Diego Padres are 11-20 ATS while the O/U is 14-15-2.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup will allow one team to either further exert their dominance over the other, or, allow one team to somehow figure it out against a team that they have struggled against for quite some time. The Dodgers are badly in need of wins at this point to prevent them from falling any deeper in the NL West standings. On the other hand, the Padres will be looking to gain some momentum of their own at home, a place where they have not played their best baseball, by the way. It will be interesting to see how both teams respond to both each other as well as their recent rough patches on Saturday.
Against The Spread Selection: Los Angeles Dodgers
My reason for the pick :
As stated, the Padres have all types of trouble(s) against the Dodgers in the past. With the experienced hitters for the Dodgers, they are able to wear down the pitching staff for the Padres and slowly take control of the game over 9 innings. I feel that LA will be looking to set the tone early in this series, with Saturday only being the prelude to game 1 on Friday. In all, I expect much of the same from the Dodgers against the reeling Padres in game 2.
